The technology

What is SLA 3D printing — and when to choose it.

Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid resin layer by layer with UV light. Because each layer is drawn optically, not extruded, it gives the smoothest surface and finest detail of any 3D printing process — 80–100 µm layers, 0.2 mm features and a near mold-like finish off the printer.

Choose SLA when surface quality, detail and accuracy matter most: show and concept models, dental and medical appliances, jewelry casting patterns, optics, anatomical models and precision tooling. With our Tough and Heat-Resistant resins (up to 90 °C HDT) it also covers functional prototyping.

Engineer's takeFor rugged, snap-fit nylon parts have a look at SLS; for budget or high-volume runs, FDM with vapor smoothing. Not sure? Ask an engineer — we'll recommend the cheapest process that meets your spec, even if it isn't SLA.

Talk to us
How much does SLA 3D printing cost?
Pricing is instant — upload your STL and the calculator returns a live price as you pick resin and finishing, from a $50 minimum. Larger parts are hollowed to cut cost and bulk quantities earn automatic discounts.
How fast can I get my SLA parts?
Most SLA orders ship in about 2 days; complex or large-format parts take 5–7 days, and rush is available on a priority queue. A free engineer DfAM check runs in parallel and a named applications engineer confirms your quote within 24 hours — most orders ship without changes.
How accurate are SLA parts?
SLA / DLP holds a typical tolerance of ±0.15 mm with 0.2 mm minimum features and 80–100 µm layers — the smoothest, finest detail of any 3D-printing process. Tighter tolerances are available with engineer review and are confirmed before printing.
How strong and durable are SLA resin parts?
It depends on the resin. Our Tough resin has high impact strength and flexes without cracking — built for snap-fits, enclosures and functional or automotive prototypes — while Heat-Resistant handles parts exposed to heat (up to 90 °C HDT). Tell us how the part will be used and an engineer recommends the right resin.
Which SLA resins do you offer?
11 production SLA resins: Standard (white), Durable General (amber), Tough / ABS-Like (grey), Engineering (white, living hinges), High-Impact Black, High-Toughness (yellow), Smooth Black, Fine-Detail (brown), Translucent (frosted), Clear / Transparent (polished) and Heat-Resistant (green, up to 90 °C HDT). We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES — no CAD file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample.
What finishing options are available?
Every part includes a standard finish (support removal + cleanup). Optional, priced per part: fine polishing (smooth, paint-ready), painting in your colors, high-gloss clear coat for transparent parts, electroplating (mirror chrome) and precision polishing to Ra 3.2 — plus threaded brass inserts. Painting and electroplating require fine polishing first; finishes combine freely and are added to your quote.
What is SLA 3D printing, and when should I choose it over FDM or SLS?
Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid resin layer by layer with a laser, giving the smoothest surface and finest detail of any 3D-printing process. Choose SLA when surface finish, fine detail and accuracy matter most — show models, optics, tooling, dental and jewelry patterns. For rugged functional nylon consider SLS; for budget or high-volume runs, FDM. Not sure? Ask an engineer — we recommend the cheapest process that meets your spec.
How big can SLA parts be?
Single-piece build envelope is up to 106 × 35 × 31 in (2700 × 900 × 800 mm) on our large-format SLA — one of the largest resin build volumes available — down to high-detail DLP at 7.6 × 4.7 × 11 in (192 × 120 × 280 mm) with 80–100 µm layers. Most parts print in one piece; only parts beyond 106 in (2.7 m) are split and bonded with engineered seams.
Is my design protected?
Mutual NDA is standard before file review — no exceptions, no extra charge, typical turnaround under 1 hour. Your files are read locally in your browser for quoting and never leave your computer until you order; every project is handled by a named engineer and managed end-to-end from our Los Angeles shop, with QA dimensional reports and full part traceability.
What is the minimum order, which files do you accept, and where do you ship from?
Minimum order is $50. We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES files — no file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample. Print services and warehouse are in Los Angeles, with free U.S. shipping on orders over $200 and free delivery within the L.A. metro. Upload your part for an instant price.
What's the difference between SLA and DLP resin printing?
Both SLA and DLP cure liquid photopolymer resin with UV light, but they do it differently. SLA uses a single laser that traces each layer point by point — ideal for large-format builds up to 106 in (2.7 m) with consistent accuracy across the whole bed. DLP flashes an entire layer at once using a digital light projector, delivering 80–100 µm resolution and slightly faster cycle times for small, highly detailed parts. We run both in our L.A. shop and select the right machine per geometry — your engineer will specify which process best suits your part.
Do SLA parts shrink or warp, and how do you prevent it?
All photopolymers shrink slightly as they cure — typically 0.1–0.3% — and wide, flat parts curl most if the cure cycle isn't dialed in. We prevent it with calibrated orientation, engineered supports and a controlled post-cure (405 nm, 60–80 °C). Tight-tolerance features are confirmed before printing and verified with a QA dimensional report on every order. Out of tolerance? We reprint it free.
What wall thickness and design rules should I follow for SLA?
Supported walls: 0.5 mm minimum (DLP) / 1.0 mm (standard SLA). Unsupported walls: 1.0 mm minimum. Minimum embossed or engraved text: 0.4 mm. Minimum feature: 0.2 mm. For hollow parts, add drainage holes ≥ 3.5 mm so uncured resin can escape — trapped resin causes pressure build-up and cracking. Keep hollow wall thickness ≥ 2 mm. Not sure your geometry will print cleanly? Upload the file and a free DfAM check will flag anything before we touch the machine.
Can you hollow parts to reduce cost and weight?
Yes — hollowing is one of the most effective ways to cut material cost and part weight on large SLA builds. Our engineers hollow parts by default when it makes sense, add internal ribs for structural integrity, and place drain holes so all uncured resin evacuates cleanly. Just note the intent in the order notes or ask during the DfAM review; we'll model the hollowing or advise on the right approach for your geometry and finish requirements.
Will support marks be visible on my finished part?
Support contact points leave small witness marks (typically 0.3–0.5 mm nubs) on surfaces they touch. Our engineers orient parts to put supports on non-cosmetic faces wherever possible, and choose the lightest support structure that keeps the build stable. If all surfaces are cosmetic — common on jewelry patterns and show models — order Fine Polishing ($0.25/g) and we sand and prime the whole part to a smooth, paint-ready finish. Mention critical surfaces in your notes and we'll plan orientation accordingly.
Can SLA resin parts be used for end-use production, not just prototypes?
Yes. Tough resin (high-impact, ABS-like) runs production jigs, fixtures, enclosures and snap-fits; Heat-Resistant (up to 90 °C HDT) suits fixtures and parts exposed to moderate heat; polished, clear-coated Clear works for optical covers and flow cells. SLA has lower elongation at break than injection-molded plastics, so we'll flag any part where SLS nylon or metal is a better long-term fit.
Is SLA resin food-safe or biocompatible?
Standard photopolymers are not food-safe or biocompatible as printed. For dental appliances, surgical guides and medical models we use biocompatible-grade resins with the required post-cure and cleaning protocols — send us your standard (e.g. ISO 10993, Class I/II) and we'll confirm applicability. For food contact, we recommend a food-grade coating applied after printing.
Is SLA resin UV-stable — can parts be used outdoors?
Standard and Tough photopolymers yellow and embrittle under prolonged UV and weather — they're not made for long-term outdoor use unprotected. For parts that will see sunlight, our High-Gloss Clear Coat adds meaningful UV resistance and service life. For demanding outdoor use (months of sun, thermal cycling), SLS nylon or FDM ASA are more naturally UV-stable. Tell us the environment and we'll match process and finish.
