What your process engineer actually checks

Locked, traceable lot chemistry

Every lot ships with a COA documenting PSD, sphericity, flow rate, apparent density, and full chemistry — and a lot number you can trace. Aerospace and medical teams reorder 4+ times without re-qualifying.

Qualified parameters, not just powder

Validated parameter sets for EOS M 290, Renishaw 500Q, SLM 280, and our own AO Metal LPBF ship with the order. Load the profile and hit density on the first build — no parameter-development burn.

A materials engineer on the line

About this product

PowderRange® 316L is a low-carbon, non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) — and also EBM and DED. With added molybdenum it delivers excellent general and chloride/pitting corrosion resistance, high impact toughness and good ductility, plus reliable weldability, making it the default stainless for corrosion-critical and biocompatible parts.

It is one of the most widely used alloys in metal additive manufacturing, found in marine, chemical-processing, aerospace, transportation and medical-implant applications.

Why teams buy this powder from Additive Plus

  • Genuine Carpenter PowderRange® 316L — gas-atomized for high sphericity, low oxygen and consistent flow.
  • Available in small, workable volumes. Most mills sell large minimums and hide pricing behind an account. We stock this alloy and sell it in accessible quantities at a clear, published price.
  • Full COA with every lot — particle size distribution, chemistry, apparent density and flow rate, with a traceable lot number.
  • Fast dispatch from Los Angeles.
  • Need a custom alloy or a tighter cut? We also run our own atomization in-house and can produce custom small-batch powder on request — separate from this stocked product.

Standards & equivalents

  • Applicable specification: ASTM F3184
  • Equivalents / alternate names: UNS S31603 · 1.4404 · AISI 316L · LaserForm 316L
  • Machine type: F — LPBF · also E — EBM / DED · Particle size: 15–45 µm · Bottle: 10 kg / 22 lbs
  • Quality: manufactured by Carpenter Additive under AS9100, AS9120, ISO 9001 & ISO 13485 quality systems. (These certifications are Carpenter’s, covering the powder; Additive Plus resells genuine, fully traceable lots and is not itself a certified manufacturer.)

Chemical composition

Typical chemistry (wt%), per the Carpenter PowderRange® datasheet:

Element Content Element Content
Iron (Fe) Balance Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.00%
Chromium (Cr) 16.0–18.0% Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.00%
Nickel (Ni) 10.0–14.0% Nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.10%

Carbon (C) ≤ 0.030% Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.045%
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.030%

Heat treatment & processing

  • 316L cannot be strengthened by heat treatment (no age hardening) — properties come from the as-built austenitic microstructure.
  • Solution annealing is optional and application-specific; it can be used to improve corrosion resistance, but is not required for most parts.
  • Excellent weldability in laser and electron-beam AM; can be processed under argon or nitrogen shielding gas.
  • Post-processing options: traditional machining, abrasive flow machining, shot-peening, grinding, polishing, and chemical milling / etching.

Key performance benefits

  • High impact toughness and good ductility
  • Moderate strength and creep resistance
  • Excellent general and intergranular corrosion resistance
  • Non-magnetic, biocompatible austenitic stainless
  • Excellent weldability for laser and electron-beam AM

Typical applications

  • Medical implants and instrumentation devices
  • Valves and fittings
  • Pumps and impellers
  • Manifolds
  • Marine and chemical-processing components
  • Tooling

Same lot 4 times in a row. We stopped re-running parameter sweeps after the second order — density was identical to the first build.

Asked about ferrite content on a Friday. A materials engineer answered Monday morning with actual data, not a sales pitch. That's why we keep ordering.

COA matches the bottle. PSD and flow are exactly what was on the sheet — we run it on a Renishaw 500Q and it hits density on the first try.
