What your process engineer actually checks
Locked, traceable lot chemistry
Every lot ships with a COA documenting PSD, sphericity, flow rate, apparent density, and full chemistry — and a lot number you can trace. Aerospace and medical teams reorder 4+ times without re-qualifying.
Qualified parameters, not just powder
Validated parameter sets for EOS M 290, Renishaw 500Q, SLM 280, and our own AO Metal LPBF ship with the order. Load the profile and hit density on the first build — no parameter-development burn.
A materials engineer on the line
Questions on ferrite content, flowability, recyclate ratios, or HIP response? A materials engineer answers directly — not a contact-form bot. Most replies in under 4 hours, NDA standard.
PowderRange® 17-4PH is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). It pairs high strength and hardness with good corrosion resistance and reliable performance up to 600°F (316°C) — and unlike most stainless grades, it can be age-hardened in a single, low-temperature step, so you can dial in the exact strength-to-toughness balance your part needs.
It is one of the most widely qualified alloys in metal additive manufacturing, used for functional production parts, rapid tooling, and corrosion-resistant components across aerospace, medical, energy, and industrial markets.
Why teams buy this powder from Additive Plus
- Genuine Carpenter PowderRange® 17-4 — vacuum-induction melted and nitrogen gas-atomized for tight, repeatable chemistry and high sphericity.
- Available in small, workable volumes. Most mills sell large minimums and hide pricing behind an account. We stock this alloy and sell it in accessible quantities at a clear, published price.
- Full COA with every lot — particle size distribution, chemistry, apparent density and flow rate, with a traceable lot number.
- Fast dispatch from Los Angeles.
- Need a custom alloy or a tighter cut? We also run our own atomization in-house and can produce custom small-batch powder on request — separate from this stocked product.

Heat treatment & process guidance
17-4PH is forgiving to print and simple to post-process. Carpenter’s recommended routes:
- As-built: mean density >99.9% is achievable on commercial LPBF systems with 20–60 µm layers and specific energy of at least 50 J/mm³.
- Stress relief: 1250°F (677°C), about 1 hour per inch of thickness.
- Homogenization: 2000°F (1093°C) for 1 hour, air cool — minimizes anisotropy (not needed if HIP’d).
- HIP (optional, for full density): about 2087°F (1141°C) at no less than 14.5 ksi (100 MPa) for ~4 hours under argon.
- Solution anneal + age (H900): solution anneal 1900°F (1038°C), then age 900°F (482°C) for 1 hour and air cool, per ASTM A564/A564M.
Note: PowderRange 17-4 runs slightly higher in nitrogen, so full martensite transformation may not occur on heat treatment. If you need cast/wrought-equivalent properties, ask us about 17-4 AR.

Unedited feedback from customers who reorder 17-4PH Stainless Steel Powder for Metal 3D Printing | LPBF Compatible - 10 kg / 22 lbs.
Same lot 4 times in a row. We stopped re-running parameter sweeps after the second order — density was identical to the first build.
Asked about ferrite content on a Friday. A materials engineer answered Monday morning with actual data, not a sales pitch. That's why we keep ordering.
COA matches the bottle. PSD and flow are exactly what was on the sheet — we run it on a Renishaw 500Q and it hits density on the first try.
