Flatness that survives repeated rebuilds

CNC-machined 316L stainless, stress-relieved and precision-ground. The 50mm profile leaves enough material to reface and re-flatten the plate across multiple build cycles before it needs replacing.

About this product

The EOS M290 SS316 Build Plate is a precision-machined 316L stainless steel platform for EOS M280 and M290 laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) systems. Its 9.92×9.92×1.97 in / 252×252×50 mm profile is stress-relieved and ground flat for repeatable first-layer adhesion across stainless steel, tool steel and other ferrous alloy builds.

Why process engineers choose this plate

Spec-backed reasons to run SS316 over a stock 304 or worn plate.

Better corrosion resistance than 304

316L adds molybdenum over 304 stainless for stronger resistance to pitting and chloride attack — useful in humid shops or when plates see cleaning chemicals between builds.

Ground flat for consistent first layers

CNC-machined and precision-ground to a tight flatness tolerance so the first fused layer bonds evenly across the full 252×252 mm platform — fewer recoater collisions, fewer failed builds.

50 mm profile, more regrind life

A thicker starting plate leaves more material to face off and re-flatten after each build cycle before it has to be retired — more usable life than a thin, single-use plate.

Fits both M280 and M290

One SKU covers both platforms, so a shop running mixed M280/M290 fleets doesn’t need to stock two separate build-plate part numbers.

How we get it to your build chamber

Every plate ships as a finished, inspected platform — not raw stock.

Step 01
Machine to EOS spec

Each plate is CNC-machined from certified 316L stainless stock to the EOS M280/M290 clamping and recoater mounting pattern.

Step 02
Stress-relieve & grind

Every plate is stress-relieved, then precision-ground to flatness tolerance before it ships — no field-lapping required on install.

Step 03
Inspect & ship

Flatness is checked on the finished plate. Standard lead time is 6–8 weeks, configured to order — contact us to confirm current turnaround.

Material compatibility & technical specifications

This plate is matched to stainless steel, tool steel and other ferrous LPBF processes on the EOS M280 and M290 — the same alloy family as the plate itself, which keeps chemistry consistent between plate and part. Full dimensions and attributes are in the Specifications tab.

  • Stainless steels: 316L, 17-4PH
  • Tool steels: H13, D2
  • Other ferrous alloys qualified on EOS M280/M290 systems

Running titanium or aluminum instead? Use a dedicated Ti64 or aluminum build plate rather than this stainless plate. Reactive metals are best kept on a matched plate to avoid iron pickup into the melt pool and to keep material certification clean — see the EOS M280/M290 Ti64 Build Plate in the alternatives below.

Flatness held across a dozen rebuilds — first layers stick without babysitting the recoater. These are our stainless workhorses, one dedicated plate per alloy family.

Machined and inspected properly — no warping after stress relief like the cheap plates we tried. Reorders match the last batch.

316L gives us the corrosion resistance we need for stainless and tool-steel runs, and the in-house inspection sheet keeps our audit trail clean.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What material is the EOS M290 SS316 Build Plate made from?
The EOS M290 SS316 Build Plate is CNC-machined from 316L stainless steel, which carries added molybdenum compared to 304 stainless. That gives it stronger resistance to pitting and chloride attack, which matters in humid shops or when plates are cleaned with harsh chemicals between builds. The plate is stress-relieved and precision-ground to flatness tolerance before it ships.
Which machines is this build plate compatible with?
This SS316 build plate is machined to fit both the EOS M280 and EOS M290 LPBF systems on a single SKU, so a shop running a mixed fleet of both machines only needs to stock one build plate part number instead of two.
Can I use this SS316 plate for titanium or aluminum builds?
We don't recommend it. This plate is matched to stainless steel, tool steel, and other ferrous LPBF processes. For titanium or aluminum builds, use a dedicated Ti64 or aluminum build plate instead — running reactive metals on a stainless plate risks iron pickup into the melt pool and complicates material certification. See the EOS M280/M290 Ti64 Build Plate for a matched alternative.
What flatness tolerance does the build plate hold, and why does it matter?
The plate is CNC-machined and precision-ground flat so the first fused layer bonds evenly across the full 252×252mm platform. A plate that isn't flat causes uneven powder spreading and recoater collisions, which is one of the more common causes of failed builds on EOS M280/M290 systems.
Is this build plate in stock, or is it made to order?
The SS316 build plate is configured to order, with a standard lead time of 6–8 weeks. Contact us before ordering if you need a confirmed ship date for your production schedule.
Can the plate be reground and reused after multiple builds?
Yes. The 50mm profile is thicker than a single-use plate, which leaves material to face off and re-flatten after each build cycle. That gives the SS316 build plate more usable service life before it needs replacing, though exact regrind count depends on your shop's resurfacing process.
Do you offer volume pricing for 5, 10, or 50 plates?
Yes. The EOS M290 SS316 Build Plate is available in 1, 5, 10, and 50-plate packages with volume pricing built in — useful for shops that rotate plates on a fixed replacement schedule. Contact us for pricing beyond 50 plates or for an official purchase order.
Can Additive Plus machine a custom build plate for a different machine or thickness?
Yes. If you run an SLM, Renishaw, or other LPBF platform, need a non-standard thickness, or want a different alloy, we machine custom build plates to your clamping spec — typical turnaround is 2–4 weeks. Talk to our materials engineer to scope the configuration.
