What your R&D lab actually checks

The third dimension

Tracking each particle through up to 30 images gives true length, width and thickness — the flatness and elongation that flow, packing and product quality depend on, which a 2D projection hides.

About this product

The Microtrac CAMSIZER 3D is a true three-dimensional dynamic image analysis system — patented particle tracking captures up to 30 images of every particle as it tumbles, measuring real length, width and thickness from 20 µm to 30 mm, not a single random 2D projection.

Why R&D labs choose the CAMSIZER 3D

The third dimension — shape data that flat 2D image analysis can’t reach.

True three-dimensional shape

Patented tracking captures up to 30 images of each particle as it tumbles — real length, width and thickness, not one random 2D projection.

Sees what 2D misses

Measuring every particle from many orientations reveals thickness, flatness and elongation a one-image method averages away — catching subtle quality shifts.

High-resolution dual cameras

A 9 MP ZOOM camera for fines and a 5 MP BASIC camera for coarse, up to 250 images per second, cover 20 µm to 30 mm without hardware changes.

Full morphology + physics

Length, width, thickness, aspect ratio, roundness and circularity plus volume, density and transparency — a complete particle description.

How Additive Plus supports it

A configured, installed analyzer with a 3D shape method dialed in on your material.

Step 01
Configure to your material

We set the dispersion and camera configuration to your particle size and the 3D shape parameters your spec calls for.

Step 02
Install & train

Factory-trained engineers install and train your team on 3D particle tracking and result interpretation on-site.

Step 03
Method & QC support

We build the SOP — 3D shape limits, sieve-equivalent cuts and a lot-to-lot baseline so results stay repeatable.

Not sure the CAMSIZER 3D is the right analyzer?

Standard 2D shape, coarse bulk, or size-and-shape combined with laser diffraction.

Tell us whether your quality problem is a shape you can’t resolve in 2D — thickness, flatness, elongation — and our applications engineer will confirm whether the CAMSIZER 3D or a standard image analyzer fits, and can run your own sample first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What makes the CAMSIZER 3D different from standard image analysis?
Standard dynamic image analysis captures one image per particle in a random orientation, so it reports a 2D outline. The CAMSIZER 3D uses patented particle tracking to photograph each particle up to 30 times as it tumbles through the measurement zone, reconstructing its true three-dimensional shape — length, width and thickness. That reveals flatness and elongation a single 2D projection cannot, which matters when subtle shape changes affect product quality.
What size range and cameras does it use?
The CAMSIZER 3D measures from 20 µm to 30 mm using two cameras — a 9 MP ZOOM camera for fine particles and a 5 MP BASIC camera for coarse — at up to 250 images per second. The dual-camera design covers the full range without hardware changes, and the high frame rate lets it capture the many images per particle that 3D tracking requires while keeping measurement times to a few minutes.
When do I need true 3D instead of 2D shape analysis?
Choose the CAMSIZER 3D when thickness, flatness or elongation drive your quality — flaky or plate-like particles, elongated crystals, or metal powder where 2D sphericity misses non-spherical geometry in the third axis. For many powders, the 2D CAMSIZER X2 is sufficient and more economical. We help you decide by looking at your material and the shape parameters your specification actually requires.
Can it also give conventional size and sieve-equivalent results?
Yes. Alongside true 3D shape, the CAMSIZER 3D reports standard size distributions, aspect ratio, roundness, circularity, volume, density and transparency, and it produces sieve-comparable results. So you gain the extra dimension without losing the conventional metrics and mesh-equivalent cuts your existing specifications and customers rely on.
Is it suitable for metal AM powder QC?
The CAMSIZER 3D suits advanced metal-powder R&D where you need genuine three-dimensional sphericity and satellite characterization, not just a 2D projection. It complements routine QC on a CAMSIZER X2. Additive Plus runs powder characterization in-house at ATO Lab and can help you decide whether 3D shape adds value for your alloy and build process, and build the SOP either way.
What lead time and support come with the CAMSIZER 3D?
The CAMSIZER 3D is configured to order — dispersion and camera setup to your material — so lead time depends on the configuration; request a current timeline and we confirm it in writing. Installation, training on 3D particle tracking and result interpretation, and method development on your own material are included, backed by application engineering with a sub-4-hour response.
