What your process engineer actually checks

Open materials is a licence plus hardware

The cartridge alone does not open the XiP — it needs the NexaX Pro open-materials licence alongside it, and you own the exposure profile afterwards. We say that up front and quote both together, so nobody discovers it after the purchase order is raised.

A materials engineer on the line

Exposure ladders, layer timing and lift settings for an unqualified resin — worked through with engineers who print Nexa3D LSPc in-house. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

About this product

The Nexa3D Custom Resin cartridge is the hardware that opens the XiP materials platform: a 1 kg cartridge you fill with a third-party or in-house resin, paired with NexaX Pro so the printer accepts and version-controls a material Nexa3D did not supply.

Nexa3D Custom Resin cartridge for XiP – open materials platform, 1 kg
The Custom Resin cartridge dispenses and communicates exactly like a standard XiP cartridge — the difference is what you put in it.

Why R&D teams buy the Custom cartridge

What changes when the XiP stops being a closed materials system.

Opens the platform

With NexaX Pro, the cartridge tells the XiP to accept a material outside the Nexa3D catalogue — the licence and the hardware work as a pair.

Material versioning

NFC on the cartridge carries the material identity, so a formulation revision is tracked rather than remembered — critical when you iterate a blend.

Same gravity-fed dispensing

Mechanically it behaves like every other XiP cartridge — no printer modification, no bypass rig, no vat hacking.

Your own print profile

You own the exposure settings. That is the point of an open platform — and also the work, which is why our engineers help you build the first profile.

How an open-material run works

Three steps from an unqualified resin to a repeatable print.

Step 01
License NexaX Pro

The open-materials mode lives in NexaX Pro. Without the licence the cartridge cannot unlock the printer, so order both together.

Step 02
Fill and register

Fill the cartridge with your resin and register the material in NexaX so the NFC chip carries its identity and version through every job.

Step 03
Build the profile

Run an exposure ladder, set layer time and lift, and lock the profile. Our engineers will walk the first iteration with you.

Typical applications

Who actually needs an open cartridge rather than a catalogue resin.

Resin formulation R&D
Testing your own photopolymer blends
Qualifying a third-party resin
Materials outside the Nexa3D catalogue
Academic and lab research
Photopolymer studies on a production platform
Application-specific compounds
Filled, pigmented or niche chemistries
Tell us which resin you want to run and what the part has to do — a materials engineer will tell you honestly whether an open profile is worth the work or whether a catalogue resin gets you there faster. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

Why source through Additive Plus

  • Genuine Nexa3D hardware — the cartridge and the NexaX Pro licence ordered together, so the open-materials mode actually works.
  • Profile development support from engineers who run LSPc printers in-house.
  • Full workflow in one place: printers, resins, wash and cure stations, spares and service.
  • Under 24h response · NDA standard on any formulation you share with us.

Not sure an open profile is worth the work?

Send us the resin data sheet and the part you want to print. We will tell you honestly whether developing an open profile pays off, or whether a qualified Nexa3D resin already does the job.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

Does the Custom Resin cartridge come filled with resin?
No — it is supplied empty. This is a hardware enabler, not a material: you fill it with the third-party or in-house resin you want to run. That is why the price sits far below a filled Nexa3D cartridge. If you were looking for a resin with a validated print profile already in NexaX, order a catalogue material such as xPRO410 or xPRO1100 instead, and we will point you at the right pack for your printer.
What else do I need to run open materials on a XiP?
You need the NexaX Pro open-materials licence alongside the cartridge. The cartridge provides the physical dispensing and the NFC identity; the licence is what allows the printer to accept a material Nexa3D did not supply and to store your own exposure profile. Ordering one without the other leaves you unable to print. Tell us which XiP you have and we will quote the cartridge and the licence together.
Does it work on the XiP Pro or the NXE machines?
This cartridge is the XiP format. XiP Pro and the NXE / NX family use different material handling, so open-materials workflows on those platforms follow a different route — talk to us before ordering if that is your machine. Sending us the printer serial number is the fastest way to get a definite answer; platform mismatches are the single most common ordering error on Nexa3D consumables and hardware.
Who develops the print profile for my resin?
You own it — that is the trade-off of an open platform. In practice you run an exposure ladder, tune layer exposure, lift height and speed, and lock the settings in NexaX. Our engineers have built LSPc profiles in-house and will walk the first iteration with you: what to print, what to measure, and how to tell an under-cured layer from a mechanical lift problem. Budget a few build plates for the first material.
Can I reuse the cartridge for a different resin?
It is refillable, but treat cross-contamination seriously: residual resin from a previous formulation changes cure behaviour and can quietly ruin a study. Clean thoroughly between materials, and if you are iterating several formulations in parallel, dedicate one cartridge per material and re-register each in NexaX so the versioning stays honest. For a serious R&D programme, a small stock of cartridges is cheaper than a contaminated result.
Does using a third-party resin affect my printer warranty?
Open materials is an official Nexa3D capability, not a workaround, so using the Custom cartridge with a NexaX Pro licence is a supported configuration. What is not covered is damage caused by an unsuitable resin — an aggressive solvent attacking the membrane, for example. Check the current warranty terms for your machine before you run an unfamiliar chemistry, and ask us if you want a second opinion on whether a formulation is safe for the vat.
This shows out of stock — can I still order?
Yes. The cartridge is currently on backorder, so contact us for the live lead time rather than relying on a published estimate — availability depends on the next Nexa3D shipment. If your project has a fixed start date, tell us the date and we will confirm what is realistic and whether a qualified catalogue resin can carry the first phase while you wait for the open-materials hardware.
