What your foundry engineer actually checks

Burnout is where it is won or lost

xCast prints tool-less, semi-hollow plastic patterns that drop into an existing dip-shell or flask-type foundry process in place of wax. Patterns are processed much like wax but without an autoclave — they are flash-fired directly out of the ceramic mold, and the low ash content gives a clean burnout that Nexa3D validated for a variety of metals, explicitly including titanium and aluminum alloys.

Nexa3D xCast castable resin for investment casting patterns
Nexa3D xCast — castable resin for tool-less investment casting patterns on the NXE 400.

Why foundries look at xCast

A wax replacement that keeps your existing shell process — and burns out clean.

Wax replacement, no autoclave

xCast patterns are processed much like wax, but the autoclave step is skipped entirely — they are flash-fired straight out of the ceramic mold.

Low-ash, clean burnout

Low ash content gives a clean burnout that Nexa3D validated across a variety of metals, explicitly including titanium and aluminum alloys.

Drops into your existing process

Patterns integrate into any production foundry’s dip-shell or flask-type investment casting process — no change to the shell line or the pour.

Pattern cost and lead time

Nexa3D reports up to 20× the productivity of traditional and additive alternatives, and pattern cost reduced by as much as 90% at one-tenth of the time.

The xCast casting workflow

From printed pattern to poured metal, without an autoclave in the loop.

Step 01
Print semi-hollow patterns

Patterns are printed tool-less on the Nexa3D NXE 400 LSPc platform — fast pattern printing for complex, light-weighted geometries of varying sizes.

Step 02
Drain, wash and post-cure

Semi-hollow patterns drain quickly, then wash and UV post-cure before they go to the shell room. Ask our materials team for the settings we run.

Step 03
Invest and flash-fire

Patterns are invested in your standard dip-shell or flask process, then flash-fired directly out of the ceramic mold. No autoclave dewax step.

Typical applications

Where a printed castable pattern beats a tooled wax one.

In-foundry series production

Investment casting workflow with xCast

Process steps as published by Nexa3D. Exact wash, cure and firing schedules depend on your shell system and alloy.

Step What happens
Pattern printing Tool-less, semi-hollow plastic patterns are printed on the Nexa3D NXE 400 LSPc platform, in place of tooled or printed wax.
Draining and washing The semi-hollow structure drains quickly; patterns are then washed to remove residual resin.
Post-cure Patterns are UV post-cured before they enter the shell room, so they hold dimension through dipping.
Investing Patterns integrate into any production foundry’s dip-shell or flask-type investment casting process.
Burnout No autoclave dewax. Patterns are flash-fired directly out of the ceramic mold, with low ash content for a clean shell.
Pour Burnout validated for a variety of metals, explicitly including titanium and aluminum alloys.

Compatible printers & workflow

  • Runs on the Nexa3D LSPc platform — the NXE 400, driven by NexaX.
  • Wash and UV post-cure are required after printing; a wash and cure station are sold separately.
  • Supplied in Black, 5 kg. Nexa3D publishes no mechanical property table, viscosity, density or numeric ash figure for xCast — our materials team can share what data is held on request.
Tell us the alloy, the shell system and the pattern geometry — a materials engineer will confirm whether xCast suits your foundry and send the process data and any technical documentation we hold. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard. xCast is currently out of stock — contact us for availability and lead time.

What is Nexa3D xCast and how does it replace wax?
xCast is a castable LSPc photopolymer that prints tool-less, semi-hollow plastic patterns as a drop-in replacement for wax in investment casting. Instead of cutting pattern tooling and injecting wax, you print the pattern straight from CAD, which takes the tooling step and its lead time out of the job. The printed xCast pattern then travels through your existing shell route much as a wax one would. Nexa3D positions xCast as an economical and scalable option for foundries producing small, large and complex metal parts, and it suits complex, light-weighted geometries that would be awkward or impossible to tool in wax.
Which printer does xCast run on?
xCast runs on the Nexa3D LSPc platform — the NXE 400, driven by Nexa3D's NexaX software. LSPc is an area-cure resin process, so a whole plate of patterns cures layer by layer rather than being traced point by point, which is what makes fast pattern printing practical for a foundry. After printing, xCast patterns need draining, washing and UV post-cure before they reach the shell room; a wash station and a cure station are sold separately. If you run a different resin platform, contact us before ordering xCast so we can confirm compatibility rather than have you find out on the build plate.
How does burnout work — do I need an autoclave?
No autoclave is needed. xCast patterns are processed similarly to wax, but the autoclave dewax step is skipped: patterns are flash-fired directly out of the ceramic mold. Low ash content is what makes that work cleanly, so the pattern burns out without leaving residue that would foul the shell or the casting. For a foundry printing patterns rather than injecting them, that removes both a piece of capital equipment and a step from the cycle. Exact firing schedules depend on your shell system, section thickness and alloy, so treat your current burnout cycle as the starting point for xCast and dial in from there.
Which metals is xCast validated for, and does it suit dip-shell or flask processes?
Nexa3D states that xCast delivers a clean, low-ash burnout validated for a variety of metals, explicitly including titanium and aluminum alloys. On the process side, xCast patterns are designed to integrate into any production foundry's dip-shell or flask-type investment casting process, so you do not have to rebuild the shell line to adopt them — the pattern changes and the rest of your route stays put. If you are casting an alloy outside titanium and aluminum, tell us which one and we will check it against the material data we hold for xCast before you commit to a batch.
What mechanical and ash data is available for xCast?
Straight answer: Nexa3D does not publish a mechanical property table, viscosity, density or a numeric ash percentage for xCast, and there is no public technical data sheet PDF for it as there is for resins such as x45. That is largely because xCast is a process consumable — the pattern is sacrificial, so its tensile or flexural numbers are not what the decision turns on. What we can do is put you in front of our materials team, who will share whatever process and material data is held for xCast against your specific alloy and shell system. We will not quote figures for xCast that we cannot source.
Is xCast in stock right now?
No — xCast 5 kg is currently out of stock. Nexa3D wound down in 2025 and its assets moved to Stratasys and iSQUARED, so availability of individual resin SKUs is now confirmed order by order rather than pulled from a standing shelf. Contact us before you plan a casting campaign around xCast and we will tell you what can actually be sourced and on what lead time, or point you at something available now — the Flashforge WaxJet 530 prints genuine wax patterns if you would rather stay on a conventional dewax route. We would rather give you a real date than take an order we cannot fill.
Can I order a sample or a larger volume of xCast?
Yes to both, subject to availability. Because xCast is currently out of stock, sample and volume requests are handled as enquiries rather than as an add-to-cart order — tell us how much you need and by when, and our materials desk will come back with what can be sourced and at what price. Volume pricing and official purchase orders go through the same desk, so a foundry running xCast in series production does not have to buy 5 kg at a time through the web checkout. If you would rather trial the workflow first, we can also discuss printing a set of xCast patterns for you instead of shipping resin.
