The technology

What is SLS 3D printing — and when to choose it.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) fuses fine nylon powder layer by layer with a CO₂ laser inside a heated build chamber. Because the surrounding un-sintered powder supports the part, SLS needs no support structures — so it prints complex geometry, internal channels, undercuts and living hinges other processes can’t, with near-isotropic strength and end-use-grade durability.

Choose SLS for functional, end-use nylon parts: enclosures, ducts, brackets, jigs, snap-fits and small-batch production without tooling. Layers are 60–120 µm and parts come off the machine with a uniform matte finish, ready to dye, vapor-smooth or paint. For the finest surface detail or optical clarity, SLA is the better call; for the lowest unit cost on simple parts, FDM.

Engineer's takeFor the smoothest cosmetic or clear parts, look at SLA; for the lowest cost on simple geometry, FDM. Need metal? LPBF. Not sure? Ask an engineer — we’ll recommend the cheapest process that meets your spec, even if it isn’t SLS.

Frequently asked questions

Don't see your question? Our team responds personally to any inquiry in under 24 hours.

Talk to us →
How much does SLS 3D printing cost?
SLS parts are priced by weight — part volume × ~1.0 g/cm³ (nylon) × the powder's per-gram rate — from a $50 minimum order. PA12 starts around $0.60/cm³; glass- and carbon-filled nylons and TPU are higher. Large parts are hollowed to cut cost and bulk quantities earn automatic discounts. Upload an STL for an instant price that updates live as you pick the powder and finishing.
How fast can I get my SLS parts?
Most SLS orders ship in about 3–5 business days; complex or large-format parts take 5–7 days, and rush is available on a priority queue. A free engineer DfAM check runs in parallel and a named applications engineer confirms your quote within 24 hours — most orders ship without changes.
How accurate are SLS parts?
SLS holds a typical tolerance of ±0.3 mm with 0.5 mm minimum wall thickness and 60–120 µm layers — with near-isotropic strength and no support structures. Tighter tolerances are available with engineer review and are confirmed before printing.
How strong and durable are SLS nylon parts?
It depends on the nylon. PA12 gives strong, near-isotropic parts for enclosures, ducts and functional prototypes; PA12-GF (glass-filled) and PA12-CF (carbon-filled) add stiffness and heat resistance for brackets and jigs; TPU is flexible and rubber-like for living hinges and gaskets; PA11 is bio-based and ductile for snap-fits and clips. Tell us how the part will be used and an engineer recommends the right powder.
Which SLS nylons do you offer?
6 qualified SLS nylons: PA12 (general-purpose, near-isotropic), PA12-GF (glass-filled, stiff and heat-resistant), PA12-CF (carbon-filled, light and rigid), TPU (flexible, rubber-like), PA11 (bio-based, ductile) and PP (chemical-resistant, low-density). Datasheets on request. We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES — no CAD file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample.
What finishing options are available?
Every part includes a standard finish — depowdering, media blasting and a uniform matte surface. Optional, priced per part: black or color dyeing, vapor smoothing (a sealed, semi-gloss surface), painting in your colors, precision polishing to Ra 3.2, and threaded brass inserts or heat-set helicoils. Finishes combine freely and are added to your quote.
What is SLS 3D printing, and when should I choose it over FDM or SLA?
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) fuses nylon powder layer by layer with a laser — the surrounding un-sintered powder supports the part, so there are no support structures. Choose SLS for functional, end-use nylon parts with complex geometry, undercuts, living hinges or small-batch production without tooling, and near-isotropic strength. For the smoothest surface or optical clarity, SLA is the better call; for the lowest unit cost on simple parts, FDM.
How big can SLS parts be?
Single-piece build envelope is up to 340 × 540 × 640 mm on our large-format SLS; most parts run in a 330 × 330 × 380 mm class with 60–120 µm layers. Parts larger than the chamber are split and bonded with engineered, glued or welded joints.
Do SLS parts need supports?
No. The bed of un-sintered nylon powder supports the part as it builds, so SLS prints undercuts, internal channels, lattices and living hinges with no support structures and no witness marks — geometry that FDM and SLA can't do without supports. Hollow parts just need escape holes so loose powder can be removed.
Do SLS parts shrink or warp, and how do you prevent it?
Nylon powders shrink as they cool from the sintering temperature — typically 2–3.5% — and large flat parts are most prone to curl if the build isn't dialed in. We compensate with calibrated scaling, part orientation, nesting and a controlled cool-down cycle. Tight-tolerance features are confirmed by an engineer before printing and verified with a QA dimensional report; if a part ships out of tolerance, we reprint it free.
What design rules should I follow for SLS?
Minimum wall 0.5–0.8 mm; minimum feature 0.3–0.5 mm; embossed or engraved text ≥ 0.8 mm. For hollow parts, add powder-escape holes ≥ 3–4 mm so un-sintered powder can be removed — trapped powder adds weight and can't be certified. For assemblies and living hinges, leave ≥ 0.4 mm clearance. Not sure your geometry will print cleanly? Upload the file and a free DfAM check flags anything before we build.
Can SLS nylon parts be used for end-use production, not just prototypes?
Yes — SLS is a true production process. PA12 and PA11 are used for end-use enclosures, ducts, clips, brackets and small-batch runs; PA12-GF and PA12-CF for jigs, fixtures and end-of-arm tooling; TPU for gaskets and grips. Batch nesting fills the chamber so unit cost drops with quantity — no tooling required. Where a part needs metal-level strength or heat resistance, we'll flag LPBF as the better long-term fit.
Is SLS nylon food-safe or biocompatible?
PA12 is available in skin-contact and biocompatible grades (ISO 10993) used for orthotics, prosthetics and wearables, and PA11 is bio-based and ductile for similar uses. As-printed nylon is not food-safe without a food-grade coating applied after printing. Contact us with your specific standard (ISO 10993, Class I/II, food contact) and we'll confirm applicability and the right finishing route.
Is my design protected?
Mutual NDA on request before file review, no extra charge, typical turnaround under 1 hour. Your files are read locally in your browser for quoting and never leave your computer until you order; every project is handled by a named engineer and managed end-to-end from our Los Angeles shop, with a dimensional check on every order.
What is the minimum order, which files do you accept, and where do you ship from?
Minimum order is $50. We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES files — no file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample. Print services and warehouse are in Los Angeles. Upload your part for an instant price.
