Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request.

Is this 304L stainless steel powder powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)?
No. PowderRange 304L stainless steel powder (45–106 µm) is the coarse 45–106 µm E cut, made for electron-beam powder bed fusion systems. The Carpenter datasheet covers the fine F cut, so the limits for this cut are on the lot certificate. For laser powder bed fusion, choose the 15–45 µm F cut of 304L, listed in the table at the top of this page with its price and availability.
What is PowderRange 304L stainless steel powder (45–106 µm)?
PowderRange 304L stainless steel powder (45–106 µm) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel powder made by Carpenter Additive for metal additive manufacturing. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance, especially against intergranular corrosion, and it is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Chromium is 18.0–20.0% and nickel 8.0–11.0%, with carbon held to 0.030% maximum. Carpenter lists medical devices, chemical processing equipment, and water and boiler components as typical uses.
Can 304L stainless steel be heat treated to make it stronger?
No. Carpenter states that PowderRange 304L cannot be strengthened by heat treatment after printing. It can be solution annealed to improve corrosion resistance, and it stays non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Printed parts can be machined, abrasive-flow machined, shot peened, ground, polished or chemically milled. If you need a stainless steel that hardens with heat treatment, look at 15-5PH or 17-4 in our catalog.
Which processes and shielding gas does 304L powder work with?
Carpenter rates PowderRange 304L as having excellent weldability in both laser and electron-beam additive manufacturing, and it can be processed in either argon or nitrogen shielding gas. The 15–45 µm F cut is the laser powder bed fusion cut, and the 45–106 µm E cut on our site is for electron-beam powder bed systems. Ask our materials engineer for starting parameters for your machine.
What is the difference between 304L and 316L powder?
316L adds 2.00–3.00% molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and chloride environments, while PowderRange 304L allows only 0.75% molybdenum and carries a little more chromium (18.0–20.0% against 16.0–18.0%). Both are low-carbon austenitic stainless steels that do not harden with heat treatment. Choose 316L for marine or chloride exposure, and 304L when general corrosion resistance is enough and a lower price per kilogram matters.
Does 304L stainless steel powder come with a certificate of analysis?
Yes. Every order of PowderRange 304L stainless steel powder (45–106 µm) ships with Carpenter Additive's certificate of analysis for the lot you receive. It lists chemistry, particle size distribution (D10, D50, D90), flow and apparent density, with the lot number for traceability. Carpenter states that its powder testing meets Nadcap Materials Testing and ISO/IEC 17025 chemical requirements. If your quality team needs to review a recent certificate before you order, ask us and we will send one.
How fast does 304L stainless steel powder ship, and how can I pay?
Add PowderRange 304L stainless steel powder (45–106 µm) to the cart and the ship date appears next to the button; in-stock Carpenter powder ships from US stock, typically within 2–5 business days. You can pay by card or PayPal, choose Invoice me at checkout to receive an invoice for bank transfer, or send a purchase order to [email protected]. Tax-exempt buyers can upload a certificate at checkout. For 100 kg or more, ask us for a volume quote.
