About this product

PowderRange® 304 / 304L is the most widely used chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel, supplied as a low-carbon powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and EBM. It combines a high strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance and outstanding fabricability and weldability — a dependable, cost-effective stainless for general-purpose and corrosion-exposed parts.

It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition (becoming slightly magnetic when cold-worked) and is not hardenable by heat treatment.

Why teams buy this powder from Additive Plus

  • Genuine Carpenter PowderRange® 304 — gas-atomized for high sphericity, low oxygen and consistent flow.
  • Available in small, workable volumes. Most mills sell large minimums and hide pricing behind an account. We stock this alloy and sell it in accessible quantities at a clear, published price.
  • Full COA with every lot — particle size distribution, chemistry, apparent density and flow rate, with a traceable lot number.
  • Fast dispatch from Los Angeles.
  • Need a custom alloy or a tighter cut? We also run our own atomization in-house and can produce custom small-batch powder on request — separate from this stocked product.

Standards & equivalents

  • Equivalents / alternate names: UNS S30403 (304L) / S30400 (304) · AISI 304 / 304L · 1.4301 / 1.4307
  • Machine type: F — LPBF · also E — EBM · Particle size: 15–45 µm · Bottle: 10 kg / 22 lbs
  • Quality: manufactured by Carpenter Additive under AS9100, AS9120, ISO 9001 & ISO 13485 quality systems. (These certifications are Carpenter’s, covering the powder; Additive Plus resells genuine, fully traceable lots and is not itself a certified manufacturer.)

Chemical composition

Typical chemistry (wt%), per the Carpenter PowderRange® datasheet:

Element Content Element Content
Iron (Fe) Balance Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.00%
Chromium (Cr) 18.00–20.00% Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.00%
Nickel (Ni) 8.00–11.00% Molybdenum (Mo) ≤ 0.75%
Copper (Cu) ≤ 0.75% Carbon (C) ≤ 0.030%
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.040% Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.030%

Heat treatment & processing

  • 304 is not hardenable by heat treatment — strength comes from the as-built austenitic microstructure (and from cold work).
  • Can be solution annealed to relieve stress and restore corrosion resistance.
  • Excellent fabricability and weldability — one of the easiest stainless grades to print and post-process.
  • Non-magnetic when annealed; becomes slightly magnetic after cold working.

Key performance benefits

  • High strength-to-weight ratio
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • High toughness and ductility
  • Excellent weldability and fabricability
  • Non-magnetic (annealed), cost-effective stainless

Typical applications

  • Medical devices
  • Chemical-processing equipment
  • Water and boiler components
  • Valves, fittings and general industrial parts

Same lot 4 times in a row. We stopped re-running parameter sweeps after the second order — density was identical to the first build.

Asked about ferrite content on a Friday. A materials engineer answered Monday morning with actual data, not a sales pitch. That's why we keep ordering.

COA matches the bottle. PSD and flow are exactly what was on the sheet — we run it on a Renishaw 500Q and it hits density on the first try.
