What your process engineer actually checks

Induction melt for demanding alloys

Induction melting reaches and holds the temperatures that high-melting-point and refractory alloys need, expanding the range of materials the atomizer can turn into spherical powder beyond what arc melting covers.

Clean, controlled melting

Controlled induction heating gives a stable, repeatable melt with less contamination, feeding the ultrasonic atomizer consistent material for consistent powder.

An applications engineer on the line

We run ultrasonic atomization and melting in-house through ATO Lab.

What the ATO Induction Melting System is

The ATO Induction Melting System (IMS) is an optional, easy-to-swap module from 3D Lab that adds induction melting to the ATO ultrasonic metal atomizers. Instead of melting the tip of a rod or wire, it melts the charge in a crucible and delivers the molten metal to the sonotrode through a pressurized, precise feeding system, inside a sealed chamber filled with shielding gas. A precise temperature measuring system and digital monitoring keep the melt where the alloy needs it.

Two things follow. Feedstock no longer has to be a rod or a wire: irregular pieces, recycled scrap and off-cuts can be atomized. And alloys with low-melting-point elements lose less of them on the way to powder. The module is compatible with the standard ATO rod feeders, so one atomizer can run either a crucible or rods, whichever the material calls for.

What it changes in your powder workflow

The IMS is the feed path to choose when the material, not the machine, sets the limits:

Feedstock form scrap, irregular pieces and off-cuts — no rod casting or wire drawing first
Volatile elements evaporation of low-melting-point elements minimized, chemistry stays closer to the charge
Yield process efficiency significantly higher than a standard configuration, according to 3D Lab
Purity melting under shielding gas in a sealed chamber for high chemical purity
Material recovery AM scrap and rejected parts go back into powder — a circular loop
Alloy development design custom alloys and atomize them in small crucible charges

3D Lab built the IMS for research labs and additive manufacturing centers that want to widen the range of materials they atomize and scale their own powder production.

How the IMS runs

Charge the crucibleLoad the 200 cm³ standard crucible (larger on request) with feedstock in whatever shape you have — irregular pieces, scrap, or rods.
Melt under controlInduction heating melts the charge in a sealed chamber under shielding gas, with the temperature measured and the process monitored digitally.
Atomize and collectThe pressurized feeding system brings the melt to the ultrasonic sonotrode; the spherical powder is collected in the Universal ATO Powder Container, ready for ATO Sieve.

Because the IMS also works with the standard ATO rod feeders, you keep the simple rod setup for routine alloys and switch to the crucible when the material calls for it.

Where the IMS stops — and what to take instead

The IMS is a module, not a standalone furnace or atomizer: it needs an ATO ultrasonic atomizer such as the ATO Lab or ATO Sparq, and each run is bounded by the crucible charge — 200 cm³ standard, larger on request. If your feedstock is already wire and you want long uninterrupted runs, the ATO Wire Feeding System fits better. For cast rods, take the Single Rod or Multi Rod Feeding System. To cast feedstock rods yourself, there is the ATO Cast induction vacuum casting furnace. And for reactive powders that must be made safe to handle after atomization, add the ATO Passivation Module.

Make your own powder, measure it, print it

The IMS widens what goes into an ATO ultrasonic atomizer; the rest of the loop stays the same. Atomize the alloy into spherical powder in the 20–120 µm range, check size distribution and sphericity on a Microtrac CAMSIZER X2+, print it on an AO Metal LPBF printer, and repeat. The atomizer, analyzer and printer are also offered together as the R&D Bundle. If you would rather have powder than equipment for now, see our custom alloy metal powder.

What usually stops people — and the honest answer

“We already feed rods.”Keep them. The IMS is compatible with the standard ATO rod feeders and gives you the choice of crucible or rods per material — it adds a feed path rather than replacing one.
“Our feedstock is scrap and irregular pieces.”That is what the crucible is for: feedstock of irregular shape melts in the crucible, so recycled scrap and rejected parts can go back into powder without casting rods first.
“Our alloy loses elements during melting.”The IMS is designed to minimize evaporation of low-melting-point elements, with melting in a sealed chamber under shielding gas and a precise temperature measuring system. Send us the composition and an applications engineer will tell you what to expect.
“200 cm³ is not enough for us.”Larger crucibles are available on request; state the charge you need and the quotation is built around it.
“Will it fit the atomizer we have?”The IMS is made for the ATO ultrasonic atomizers. Tell us the model and serial number and the quotation confirms the fit and what is needed to mount it.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What is the ATO Induction Melting System?
The ATO Induction Melting System (IMS) is an optional, easy-to-swap module from 3D Lab for the ATO ultrasonic metal atomizers. It melts the charge by induction in a crucible and feeds the molten metal to the ultrasonic sonotrode, so feedstock of any shape can be atomized into fine, homogeneous spherical powder.
How is the IMS different from the rod and wire feeders?
The rod and wire feeders melt the tip of a pre-formed rod or wire. The IMS melts a charge in a crucible — 200 cm³ standard — so it accepts irregular pieces and scrap, and it is designed to minimize evaporation of low-melting-point elements. It is compatible with the standard ATO rod feeders, so you can use crucible or rods as the material requires.
What crucible size does the IMS use?
The standard crucible has a volume of 200 cm³. Larger crucibles are available on request. The crucibles are double-layer, for insulation and steady processing.
Which atomizers is the IMS compatible with?
It is made for the ATO ultrasonic metal atomizers. 3D Lab lists the IMS among the optional modules of the ATO Lab, and the ATO Sparq is offered with induction melting. Tell us the model you have or plan to buy and the quotation confirms the fit.
Does the IMS help with material recovery?
Yes. Because it melts feedstock of irregular shape, 3D Lab describes it as ideal for metal powder recovery: AM scrap, off-cuts and rejected parts can be turned back into powder, supporting a circular manufacturing loop.
Can I atomize alloys with volatile elements?
The IMS was designed to minimize evaporation of low-melting-point elements. Melting happens in a sealed chamber filled with shielding gas, with a precise temperature measuring system. Send the composition to an applications engineer for an assessment of your alloy.
Does the IMS increase atomization yield?
According to 3D Lab, process efficiency with the IMS is significantly higher than with a standard configuration. The actual figure depends on alloy and parameters.
How is the powder collected?
Into the Universal ATO Powder Container, which is designed for use in a protective gas atmosphere and connects to ATO Sieve and the other ATO Suite devices, so the powder can move to sieving without exposure to air.
Can the IMS be operated remotely?
With the ATO Remote Control module, key parameters can be adjusted from a tablet. The IMS itself is designed to be run by a single operator.
Which alloys can I make with the IMS?
The ATO atomizers have produced powders from steels, titanium, nickel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, refractory, precious and high-entropy alloys, with melting temperatures up to 3400 °C. The IMS also lets you design your own alloys and atomize them in small crucible charges. Which melting route suits a given alloy is something an applications engineer confirms with you.
How much does the ATO Induction Melting System cost?
The price depends on your atomizer and configuration, so it is quoted rather than listed. Request a formal quotation and you receive configuration, price, payment terms and lead time on Additive Plus letterhead. Installation and on-site operator training are included in every quotation, and you pay against an invoice; Additive Plus is registered in SAM.gov as a small business.
What is the lead time and warranty for the ATO Induction Melting System?
Lead time is 8–12 weeks after a confirmed order; the quotation states the date. The warranty is 12 months and is handled locally by US service engineers.
Can I get a free powder sample or a trial atomization?
Yes. Free powder samples of standard alloys are available, so you can check ATO powder quality before you buy. If you want to see your own alloy atomized, a paid trial atomization can be arranged — ask an applications engineer.
Can I see an ATO atomizer running?
Yes. You can see an ATO atomizer running in California, at UC Irvine (UCI). Book your visit on our visit page: additiveplus.com/ato-visit/.
