The technology

What is FDM 3D printing — and when to choose it.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) builds a part by extruding molten engineering thermoplastic filament layer by layer along a toolpath. It runs the same production plastics you’d injection-mould — ABS, ASA, PETG, carbon-filled nylon, PPS-CF and ULTEM — so parts are tough, chemically resistant and ready for real service, not just show.

Choose FDM for functional, engineering-grade thermoplastic parts: jigs, fixtures, housings, brackets, ducting and low-volume end-use components — especially larger, robust parts in real production plastics. FDM strength is anisotropic, so orientation is set for the load case. For fine detail or the smoothest cosmetic surface, SLA is the better call; for isotropic, support-free nylon, SLS.

Engineer's takeFor the smoothest cosmetic or clear parts, look at SLA; for isotropic nylon with no supports, SLS. Need metal? LPBF. Not sure? Ask an engineer — we’ll recommend the process that best meets your spec, even if it isn’t FDM.

Talk to us →
How much does FDM 3D printing cost?
FDM parts are priced per part by the thermoplastic, part geometry and any finishing, from a $50 minimum order. Reinforced and high-performance plastics (carbon-filled nylon, PPS-CF, ULTEM) cost more than PLA, ABS or PETG. Upload your model and a named applications engineer confirms a firm quote and lead time within 24 hours — most parts are quoted the same day.
How fast can I get my FDM parts?
A named applications engineer confirms your quote and lead time within 24 hours, and a free DfAM check runs in parallel. FDM is one of the faster processes for functional thermoplastic parts; your exact lead time is confirmed with the quote and depends on the material, size and finishing.
How accurate are FDM parts?
FDM holds a typical tolerance of about ±0.3–0.5 mm with roughly 1 mm minimum wall thickness and 100–300 µm layers. FDM strength is anisotropic — stronger in-plane than across layers — so part orientation matters and is set for the load case. Tighter tolerances are available with engineer review and confirmed before printing.
How strong and durable are FDM thermoplastic parts?
It depends on the thermoplastic. ABS and ASA are tough, impact-resistant engineering plastics for functional prototypes, jigs and housings; PETG-HF is tough and chemical-resistant; carbon-filled nylon (PA6-CF, PA12-CF) and PPS-CF give high stiffness and heat resistance for structural brackets; ULTEM 1010 is a high-temperature, flame-retardant plastic; TPU is flexible and rubber-like. Tell us how the part will be used and an engineer recommends the right material.
Which FDM thermoplastics do you offer?
9 production FDM thermoplastics: PLA, ABS, ASA, PETG-CF (carbon-filled), PETG-HF (high-flow tough), PA6-CF (carbon-filled nylon), PPS-CF (chemical/heat-resistant), TPU 95A (flexible) and PA12-CF (25% carbon-fiber nylon). Engineering grades available on request: ULTEM 1010 (food-contact, PEEK-like), imported ABS-M30, UV-stable ASA and imported nylon carbon fiber. We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES — no CAD file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample.
What finishing options are available?
Every FDM part includes standard finishing — support removal and cleanup. Optional per part: sanding and smoothing, painting in your colors, threaded brass inserts and heat-set helicoils (M2–M10), and precision polishing. Finishes combine freely and are added to your quote; an engineer confirms which apply to your material.
What is FDM 3D printing, and when should I choose it over SLS or SLA?
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) builds parts by extruding molten thermoplastic filament layer by layer. Choose FDM for functional, engineering-grade thermoplastic parts — jigs, fixtures, housings, brackets and end-use components — and for large, robust parts in real production plastics like ABS, ASA, carbon-filled nylon, PPS-CF and ULTEM. For fine detail or the smoothest surface, choose SLA; for isotropic, support-free nylon, choose SLS. Not sure? Ask an engineer and we recommend the right process.
How big can FDM parts be?
FDM supports large-format thermoplastic parts. The exact single-piece build envelope depends on the machine and material, so we confirm it with your quote; parts beyond the chamber are split and bonded with engineered joints. Send your dimensions and an engineer confirms whether it prints in one piece.
Which way should my FDM part be oriented?
Because FDM is stronger in-plane than across layers, we orient the part so the primary load runs along the layers, not across them. Orientation also affects surface finish, support needs and accuracy on critical features. Our engineers set the best orientation for your load case as part of the free DfAM review — just tell us how the part is used.
What design rules should I follow for FDM?
Minimum wall roughly 1–1.2 mm (at least two perimeters); minimum feature ~1 mm; embossed or engraved text ≥ 1 mm. Add generous fillets on load paths, avoid unsupported overhangs beyond ~45° where possible, and leave ≥ 0.4 mm clearance for mating parts. Not sure your geometry will print cleanly? Upload the file and a free DfAM check flags anything before we build.
Can FDM parts be used for end-use production, not just prototypes?
Yes — FDM runs real production thermoplastics, so parts go straight into service: ABS and ASA housings and jigs, carbon-filled nylon and PPS-CF structural brackets, ULTEM high-temperature components and TPU flexible parts. It's ideal for low-volume end-use parts and shop-floor tooling without mold cost. Where a part needs metal-level strength, we'll flag LPBF as the better long-term fit.
Can FDM parts get threads and metal inserts?
Yes. We add heat-set threaded brass inserts (M2–M8) and helicoils (M2–M10) for durable, reusable metal threads in bolted assemblies — the standard way to fasten into FDM plastics. Tell us the thread sizes and locations and we quote the inserts with your part.
Is my design protected?
Mutual NDA on request before file review, no extra charge, typical turnaround under 1 hour. Your files are read locally in your browser for quoting and never leave your computer until you order; every project is handled by a named engineer and managed end-to-end from our Los Angeles shop, with a dimensional check on every order.
What is the minimum order, which files do you accept, and where do you ship from?
Minimum order is $50. We accept STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF and IGES files — no file? We can redraw from a sketch, photo or sample. Print services and warehouse are in Los Angeles. Upload your part for a fast engineer-confirmed quote.
