The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CN-r is an automated Dumas analyzer for nitrogen / protein and carbon determination. It delivers reliable results in under three minutes at a low cost per sample, using interleave analysis — combustion of the current sample runs while the previous one is being measured. A modern, space-saving alternative to Kjeldahl (results over 70× faster), it has an integrated PC with tiltable touchscreen and FDA 21 CFR Part 11-compliant software, and is available as a carbon-and-nitrogen (CN-r) or nitrogen-only (N-r) analyzer.

What does the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CN-r measure?

The ELEMENTRAC CN-r determines total nitrogen (and protein, via a protein factor) and carbon by the Dumas combustion method. It is available in two configurations: a carbon-and-nitrogen analyzer (CN-r) or a nitrogen/protein-only analyzer (N-r). Nitrogen is measured in a thermal conductivity detector and carbon in an NDIR detector, over ranges of 0.03–300 mg N and 0.02–175 mg C.

How does the Dumas method compare to Kjeldahl?

The Dumas method combusts the sample and measures the released nitrogen directly, giving results over 70× faster than Kjeldahl — under three minutes per sample — without hazardous acids or lengthy digestion. It is internationally recognized and validated by AOAC, AACC, ISO, DIN, ASBC, AOCS and OIV, so it is accepted for protein and nitrogen reporting in food, feed and agriculture.

What samples can the CN-r handle?

The CN-r delivers precise Dumas results on any matrix, solid or liquid — foods (grains, dairy, meat), animal feed, fertilizers, soil and fuels such as coal and coke. Typical sample weights are up to 1.0 g, 0.5 g nominal. High-priority samples take precedence and are measured immediately, without re-sorting in the autoloader, which suits busy food and feed labs.

How does interleave analysis speed things up?

Interleave analysis means the CN-r combusts the current sample while it is still measuring the previous one, rather than running them strictly one after another. This overlap is what allows results in under three minutes and high daily throughput, and it is one of the reasons the cost per sample is low. Intelligent gas-saving functions and smart consumable use reduce running costs further.

Is the CN-r software compliant for regulated labs?

Yes. The Windows-based ELEMENTS software is FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant and includes an audit trail, user-group management, calibration and diagnostics. Thanks to its network integrity and web-browser architecture, you can access the analyzer from any computer on the company network and have all data available at any time — useful for regulated food, feed and pharmaceutical environments.

What does the CN-r need to run?

It needs oxygen (99.999 % purity), helium (99.996 % purity) and oil- and water-free compressed air, and runs on 230 VAC ±10 %, 50/60 Hz. Reagents are magnesium perchlorate, sodium hydroxide, copper and aluminum oxide. An integrated PC with tiltable touchscreen is built in, and all consumables can be replaced in under 20 minutes. The analyzer measures about 757 × 785 × 620 mm and weighs 135 kg.
