What your QC lab actually checks

Reliable C/S down to low ppm

Combustion in a resistance furnace to 1,550 °C, with two drying columns and up to four solid-gold infrared cells, determines carbon and sulfur simultaneously from 20 ppm to 100 %. An optimized low-blank sample port with reduced diameter and oxygen purge drastically lowers the atmospheric CO₂ blank, so even low-carbon organic samples are measured reliably. An optional second furnace adds fast fractionated analysis.

IR-cell configuration, low-blank port and dual-furnace setup, calibration and blank control from engineers who run materials characterization in-house. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

About this product

The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CS-r is a resistance-furnace analyzer for fast, simultaneous carbon and sulfur in predominantly organic matrices. The sample is burned in oxygen at up to 1,550 °C (adjustable in 1 °C steps); after the water vapor is removed by two drying columns, the CO₂ and SO₂ are measured in up to four solid-gold infrared cells over a wide range from 20 ppm to 100 %. An optimized low-blank sample port makes reliable low-carbon analysis possible, and an optional second furnace enables fast fractionated analysis.

Why materials and environmental labs choose the CS-r

Reliable carbon and sulfur in organics — down to low ppm, up to 100 %.

Simultaneous C/S, 20 ppm–100 %

Fast, simultaneous carbon and sulfur over a wide range from 20 ppm to 100 % in a resistance furnace up to 1,550 °C, with high sample weights for heterogeneous matrices.

Optimized low-blank sample port

A reduced-diameter sample port with an oxygen purge at the inlet drastically lowers the atmospheric CO₂ blank, enabling reliable carbon analysis in the low measuring range.

Solid-gold IR path, up to 4 cells

A solid-gold IR path gives extended cell lifetime, and up to four infrared cells with different sensitivities cover both low and high concentrations reliably.

Dual-furnace option + TIC

An optional second furnace (ELTRA Dual Furnace Concept) enables fast fractionated analysis at different temperatures; the TIC module adds direct TIC by acidification to DIN EN 15936.

What does the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CS-r measure?
The ELEMENTRAC CS-r determines carbon and sulfur simultaneously in predominantly organic matrices — coal, coke, fuels, oil, plant materials, plastics, rubber, soil and waste. It burns the sample in oxygen in a resistance furnace up to 1,550 °C and measures the released CO₂ and SO₂ by infrared absorption, over a wide range from 20 ppm to 100 %.
How does the measurement work?
The sample is burned in an oxygen atmosphere at up to 1,550 °C, freely adjustable in 1 °C steps. The combustion gases (CO₂, H₂O, SO₂) pass a dust filter and two magnesium-perchlorate drying columns that remove the water vapor, and the dried CO₂ and SO₂ are then measured in up to four infrared cells with different sensitivities. Analysis takes about 60–180 seconds.
How does the low-blank sample port help?
The CS-r (and CHS-r) series uses an optimized sample port with reduced diameter and an oxygen purge at the sample inlet. This drastically reduces the atmospheric CO₂ blank value during sample introduction, which is what makes reliable carbon analysis possible in the low measuring range — down to 20 ppm — on organic samples where the blank would otherwise dominate.
Can the CS-r run TOC and TIC?
Yes. For TOC analysis a chemical tube can be used as a halogen trap to absorb acid residues and halogens. Combined with ELTRA's TIC module, the CS-r determines total inorganic carbon by acidification, enabling direct TIC analysis in soils, building materials and other products in compliance with DIN EN 15936. Additive Plus configures the TIC option to your application.
What is the dual-furnace option?
The CS-r can be connected to an additional furnace without detectors — the ELTRA Dual Furnace Concept, also known from the ELEMENTRAC CS-d. This allows fast fractionated analysis by applying different temperatures, and provides throughput and safety for high sample volumes. It is a good fit when you need to separate carbon fractions or keep a busy lab moving.
What does the CS-r need to run?
It needs oxygen at 99.5 % purity (2–4 bar), an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. It runs on 230 V, 50/60 Hz (max heating-up current 20 A). Operating options include an external monitor and keyboard, a monitor holder with wireless keyboard, or a touchscreen. The analyzer measures about 580 × 520 × 750 mm and weighs ~77 kg.
What is the lead time, and can Additive Plus set it up?
The ELEMENTRAC CS-r is configured to order; request a quote for the current lead time. Additive Plus is an authorized ELTRA / Verder Scientific channel and handles installation, oxygen and balance connection, calibration and operator training, then helps build your carbon/sulfur and TOC SOP. You can also send a sample for a paid measurement first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.
