What your QC lab actually checks

Moisture, ash & volatiles in one run

A programmable ceramic furnace (50–1,000 °C) tied to an encapsulated balance measures moisture, ash and volatiles on up to 19 samples plus a reference in a single automated cycle. Automatic crucible-lid handling and selectable N₂/O₂/air make it ASTM D 7582-compliant for coal and ideal for LOI and ash across many materials.

About this product

The ELTRA TGA Thermostep is a thermogravimetric analyzer that combines a programmable furnace with an integrated balance, so heating and weighing happen in one instrument. It measures moisture, ash and volatiles in a single automated run, on up to 19 samples plus a reference, at temperatures freely defined from 50 to 1,000 °C — an efficient, high-throughput alternative to laboratory ovens and muffle furnaces.

Why QC labs choose the TGA Thermostep

Automated moisture, ash and volatiles — many samples, one run, one SOP.

19 samples in one run

A carousel processes up to 19 samples plus a reference (500 mg–5 g each). Weigh in place or load a pre-weighed carousel — high throughput without manual oven-and-balance cycling.

Moisture, ash & volatiles together

A programmable ceramic furnace (50–1,000 °C in 1 °C steps) with automatic crucible-lid handling determines all three parameters in one cycle — ASTM D 7582 compliant for coal.

Selectable atmospheres

Choose nitrogen, oxygen or ambient air at each stage of the analysis, so you can gently oxidize or protect the sample exactly when the method requires it.

Precise, stable weighing

An encapsulated weighing cell (0.1 mg resolution, 0.02% RSD) isolated from the ambient atmosphere, with dual non-encapsulated thermocouples for fast, precise temperature control.

How Additive Plus supports it

A configured, installed analyzer with your TGA methods ready to run.

Step 01
Configure to your samples

We set up the SOPs — temperatures, atmospheres, heating stages and lid handling — for your material and standard before it ships.

Step 02
Install & train

Factory-trained engineers install, connect the gases and exhaust, and train your team on weighing, SOPs and results.

Step 03
Method & QC support

We help validate the method against your standard — ASTM D 7582, LOI or dry-mass/ash — and build a repeatable throughput workflow.

Common questions

What does the ELTRA TGA Thermostep measure?
The TGA Thermostep is a thermogravimetric analyzer that determines moisture, ash and volatiles — as well as loss on ignition — by heating samples in a programmable furnace and continuously weighing them on an integrated balance. Because heating and weighing are combined in one instrument, all these parameters are measured automatically in a single analysis run, replacing manual work with laboratory ovens and muffle furnaces.
How many samples can it run at once?
Up to 19 samples plus one reference crucible in a single cycle, with typical sample weights between 500 mg and 5 g. You can weigh each sample directly into its crucible in the carousel, or load a carousel that has already been weighed externally. A full moisture/volatile/ash analysis takes roughly four hours and runs unattended once started.
What temperature range and atmospheres does it support?
The resistance-heated ceramic furnace is programmable in 1 °C steps from 50 to 1,000 °C, and you define the temperature profile in the SOP. At each stage you can select nitrogen, oxygen or ambient air — for example an inert step to drive off volatiles, then oxygen to ash the sample. Two non-encapsulated thermocouples give fast, precise temperature control.
What is the crucible-lid handling for?
The TGA Thermostep can raise or lower crucible lids automatically at each stage of the analysis. Covering the sample during the volatiles step and uncovering it for ashing is exactly what the coal method requires, so the analyzer performs safe, ASTM D 7582-compliant determination of volatiles without an operator opening a hot furnace to move lids by hand.
Which materials and standards is it used for?
The TGA Thermostep handles inorganic, organic and synthetic samples across agriculture, chemistry and plastics, coal and power, construction materials, environment and recycling, food, geology and mining, glass and ceramics, and pharmaceuticals. It is ASTM D 7582 compliant for coal proximate analysis and widely used for loss on ignition on building materials and dry-mass/ash on food.
What does it need to run?
The TGA Thermostep needs a PC and monitor, an external exhaust (100 mm, blower ~4 m³/min), and the gases your method uses — oxygen and/or nitrogen at 99.9% (2–4 bar) and air at 99.5% (5–6 bar). It runs on 230 V (max 32 A). The encapsulated weighing cell (0.1 mg resolution, 0.02% RSD) is isolated from the ambient atmosphere for stable, precise results.
What is the lead time, and can Additive Plus set it up?
The TGA Thermostep is configured to order; request a quote for the current lead time. Additive Plus is an authorized ELTRA / Verder Scientific channel and handles installation, gas and exhaust connection, and operator training, then validates the SOP against your standard — ASTM D 7582, LOI or ash. You can also send samples for a paid measurement first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.
