The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC ONH-p 2 determines oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen in metals and inorganic materials by inert gas fusion. The sample melts in a graphite crucible in a powerful 8.5 kW electrode impulse furnace at temperatures in excess of 3,000 °C; oxygen is measured as CO₂ in up to two infrared cells, while nitrogen and hydrogen are detected in their elemental form in a high-sensitivity thermal conductivity cell. A closed gas system feeds 100 % of the sample gas to the detectors for low detection limits — essential for O/N control in steel, titanium and metal AM powders.

What does the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC ONH-p 2 measure?
The ELEMENTRAC ONH-p 2 determines oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen in metals and inorganic materials such as steel, non-ferrous metals, ceramics, slags and ores. It is available as a single-element analyzer (O, N or H) or in a multi-element configuration for ON, OH, NH or ONH. Oxygen is measured as CO₂ in up to two infrared cells; nitrogen and hydrogen are measured in their elemental form in a thermal conductivity cell.
How does the inert gas fusion measurement work?
The weighed sample is placed on the sample port and flushed with carrier gas to keep atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen out. A graphite crucible is first outgassed in the impulse furnace to reduce contamination, then the sample is dropped in and melted above 3,000 °C. Carbon in the crucible reacts with the sample's oxygen to form CO, which a copper-oxide catalyst converts to CO₂ for IR measurement; nitrogen and hydrogen are released in elemental form and measured by thermal conductivity. Analysis takes about 120–180 seconds.
Which carrier gases does it use?
The ONH-p 2 uses an ON mode with helium carrier gas (optionally the less expensive argon) and an OH mode with nitrogen carrier gas, to make the most of the sensitive thermal conductivity cell. For hydrogen, the nitrogen carrier and sample gas pass through a Schuetze reagent instead of the copper-oxide catalyst. Additive Plus configures the carrier-gas mode to your elements and material.

Yes. Oxygen and nitrogen content are critical quality parameters for titanium and other metal AM powders, because oxygen pickup during atomization, handling and reuse affects part properties.
