The ELTRA CW-800 simultaneously determines carbon dioxide and water in inorganic samples. The sample is weighed into a quartz boat and heated in a resistance furnace, adjustable up to 1,000 °C in 1 °C steps; depending on temperature, residual or crystallization water and CO₂ released from carbonates (such as CaCO₃) are measured by infrared cells. What does the ELTRA CW-800 measure?
The CW-800 simultaneously determines carbon dioxide and water in inorganic samples. The CO₂ is released from carbonates (for example CaCO₃) and the water is residual or crystallization water bound in the sample. It is used mainly for gypsum, cement, limestone, minerals, ores and soil, where both the carbonate and moisture fractions are quality-control parameters.
How does the measurement work?
You weigh the sample into a quartz boat and place it on the loading mechanism of the furnace. The resistance furnace is set to a defined temperature up to 1,000 °C, and depending on that temperature the water and CO₂ are released and carried by nitrogen to the infrared cells. An external PC controls the process and calculates the result. A determination takes about 2–3 minutes.
Which materials is the CW-800 used for?
The CW-800 is designed for inorganic matrices: gypsum, cement, limestone, minerals, ores and soil. It is widely used in construction-material, geology/mining and environment/recycling labs to determine carbonate CO₂ and bound water. Because sample preparation is minimal, it suits both routine incoming inspection and process control.
Why does it use nitrogen and no halogen trap?
The CW-800 releases CO₂ and water thermally rather than by combustion, so it uses a nitrogen carrier (99.995 %) instead of oxygen. Customized infrared cells with a gold IR path extend cell life on halogen- or acid-containing samples, which is why no separate halogen trap is required. Electronic gas-flow control keeps the measurement conditions stable.
How is the CW-800 calibrated?
Calibration uses certified standard materials and supports both single-point and multipoint calibration. One or two infrared cells can be combined for a wide dynamic measuring range, and the multilingual software allows customized displays and result export. What does the CW-800 need to run?
It needs nitrogen at 99.995 % purity (2–4 bar), an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. It runs on 230 V, 50/60 Hz (max 10 A, 2,300 W) and uses magnesium perchlorate and sodium hydroxide as reagents. A 5 kVA voltage stabilizer is available for unstable supplies. The analyzer measures about 550 × 800 × 600 mm and weighs ~65 kg.
