PowderRange® H13 is a versatile air-hardening, 5% chromium hot-work tool steel for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). It combines high impact toughness, temper resistance and excellent thermal-fatigue resistance — the classic choice for die-casting and hot-forming tooling.

Processing note: like all high-carbon tool steels, H13 has challenging weldability in laser/electron-beam AM — part geometry and build parameters must be controlled (and preheat used) to avoid micro-cracking. For tooling where AM processability is the priority, ask us about M300 maraging steel as an alternative.

Why teams buy this powder from Additive Plus

  • Genuine Carpenter PowderRange® H13 — gas-atomized for high sphericity, low oxygen and consistent flow.
  • Available in small, workable volumes. Most mills sell large minimums and hide pricing behind an account. We stock this alloy and sell it in accessible quantities at a clear, published price.
  • Full COA with every lot — particle size distribution, chemistry, apparent density and flow rate, with a traceable lot number.
  • Fast dispatch from Los Angeles.
  • Need a custom alloy or a tighter cut? We also run our own atomization in-house and can produce custom small-batch powder on request — separate from this stocked product.

Standards & equivalents

  • Applicable specification: ASTM A681
  • Equivalents / alternate names: H13 · 1.2344 · X40CrMoV5-1 · SKD61
  • Machine type: F — LPBF · Particle size: 15–45 µm · Bottle: 10 kg / 22 lbs

Chemical composition

Typical chemistry (wt%), per the Carpenter PowderRange® datasheet:

Element Content Element Content
Iron (Fe) Balance Manganese (Mn) 0.25–0.50%
Chromium (Cr) 4.80–5.50% Carbon (C) 0.35–0.42%
Molybdenum (Mo) 1.10–1.50% Nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.10%
Vanadium (V) 0.80–1.15% Oxygen (O) ≤ 0.10%
Silicon (Si) 0.80–1.20% Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.03%
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.02%

Heat treatment & processing

  • Air-hardening with low distortion; austenitize, then temper (typically a double temper) to the target hardness.
  • Use platform preheat and validated parameters to control residual stress and avoid micro-cracking in the build.
  • Stress relief before part removal is recommended.

Key performance benefits

  • High impact toughness and good ductility
  • High-temperature strength
  • Good abrasion resistance at temperature
  • Excellent resistance to thermal fatigue
  • Limited distortion during hardening

Typical applications

  • Tooling for extrusion and molding
  • Die casting
  • Valves and fittings
  • Pumps and impellers
  • Manifolds

Same lot 4 times in a row. We stopped re-running parameter sweeps after the second order — density was identical to the first build.

Marcus K. Process Engineer · Aerospace OEM

Asked about ferrite content on a Friday. A materials engineer answered Monday morning with actual data, not a sales pitch. That's why we keep ordering.

PS
Priya S. R&D Lead · Medical Devices

COA matches the bottle. PSD and flow are exactly what was on the sheet — we run it on a Renishaw 500Q and it hits density on the first try.
