About this product

SHINING3D BlueStar Mapping is texture-mapping software that projects true-color photographic texture onto a 3D-scan model. It maps multi-angle photos captured on a smartphone or DSLR camera onto the mesh, producing a model with high-precision, high-clarity, true-color texture — up to 16384×16384 (16K) resolution at ≤0.1 mm mapping accuracy, in around 30 minutes.

Why engineers choose BlueStar Mapping

Real-photo texture, mapped accurately onto the scan and refined fast.

True-color from real photos

Multi-angle photos from a smartphone or DSLR are projected onto the scan mesh as photographic texture — up to 16384×16384 (16K), 24-bit — well beyond what a scanner’s onboard color capture resolves.

Mapping you can trust

Mapping accuracy is ≤0.1 mm, with mapping error held to ≤0.08 + 0.02×D/300 mm and chromatic aberration to CIEDE2000 ≤5 — so texture lands on the right geometry with true color, not drift.

AI main-body detection

An interactive semantic-segmentation AI model extracts the object’s main body — learn once, one-click apply to every photo — filtering out backgrounds, light spots, and lens contamination to ≤0.01%.

Seam editing + Photoshop round-trip

A real-time seam editor filters distortion along texture seams, Global Uniform balances brightness and contrast, and Photoshop integration lets edits in third-party software update the texture live in the app.

How BlueStar Mapping Works: Photos to True-Color Texture

BlueStar Mapping imports a scan mesh (STL or OBJ) plus a set of multi-angle photos. Relative orientation calculates each photo’s position and builds a sparse point cloud, AI main-body detection isolates the object across every shot, then the photos are mapped and blended into a seamless, distortion-filtered texture. The finished model exports to OBJ, PLY, FBX, STL, and OFF for downstream 3D, AR, or rendering pipelines. See the full specifications below.

Texture Quality & Accuracy

Texture output runs at three resolution tiers — 4096×4096 (free), 8192×8192, and 16384×16384 (16K) — supporting multiple 16K textures at 102 dpi, 24-bit depth in JPG. Mapping accuracy is ≤0.1 mm and color fidelity is held to CIEDE2000 ≤5 chromatic aberration, with foreign objects, light spots, and lens contamination filtered to ≤0.01%. A built-in Texture Baker bakes Albedo and Normal maps via Marmoset for use in game engines and rendering tools.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What is BlueStar Mapping and what does it do?
BlueStar Mapping is Shining 3D's texture-mapping software. It maps multi-angle photos captured on a smartphone or DSLR camera onto a 3D-scan mesh, generating a model with high-precision, high-clarity, true-color texture. You import an STL or OBJ scan, add photos, and BlueStar Mapping aligns and blends them into a seamless texture in around 30 minutes. The textured model exports to OBJ, PLY, FBX, STL, and OFF for 3D, AR, and rendering pipelines.
What texture resolution can BlueStar Mapping produce?
BlueStar Mapping supports three texture resolution tiers: 4096×4096 (free), 8192×8192, and 16384×16384 (16K). It can output multiple 16K textures at 102 dpi and 24-bit depth in JPG. That resolution captures fine surface color and detail that a scanner's onboard color capture cannot resolve, which is why BlueStar Mapping is used where photographic texture quality matters — heritage digitization, media assets, and product visuals.
How accurate is the texture mapping?
BlueStar Mapping holds mapping accuracy to ≤0.1 mm, with mapping error of ≤0.08 + 0.02×D/300 mm, so texture lands on the correct geometry. Color fidelity is held to CIEDE2000 ≤5 chromatic aberration, and foreign objects, light spots, and lens contamination are filtered to ≤0.01%. Relative orientation calculates each photo's position and builds a sparse point cloud, and the seam editor removes distortion where textures meet — the result is accurate color on accurate geometry.
What cameras and input files does BlueStar Mapping need?
BlueStar Mapping takes a 3D-scan mesh in STL or OBJ plus a set of multi-angle photos. The photos can come from a standard smartphone or a DSLR camera — no specialized rig is required. AI main-body detection isolates the object in each photo automatically, so backgrounds and clutter do not interfere. You capture the object from several angles, load the photos into BlueStar Mapping, and the software handles alignment and blending onto the mesh.
What file formats does BlueStar Mapping export?
BlueStar Mapping exports textured models to OBJ, PLY, FBX, STL, and OFF — universal 3D formats that import into rendering, AR, game-engine, and CAD pipelines. A built-in Texture Baker can bake Albedo and Normal maps via Marmoset for real-time engines. That format range means the textured model from BlueStar Mapping drops into whatever downstream tool your workflow uses without a conversion step.
Which scanners does BlueStar Mapping work with?
BlueStar Mapping works with all 3D scanners, since it maps photos onto a standard STL or OBJ mesh regardless of how that mesh was captured. With Shining 3D scanners the integration is tighter — one-click transfer pulls scan data straight from the 3D scan software, so you skip the export/import step. Whether you scan on an EinScan, FreeScan, or a third-party device, the mesh flows into BlueStar Mapping for texturing.
Can I edit textures in Photoshop, and what OS does BlueStar Mapping need?
Yes. BlueStar Mapping includes Photoshop integration — save an edit in the third-party software and the texture updates live in the main application, so retouching fits your existing workflow. A real-time seam editor and Global Uniform brightness and contrast balancing handle most cleanup inside BlueStar Mapping itself. The software runs on Windows and is licensed by edition; contact us and we will recommend the right configuration and set up a sample job so you can evaluate before committing.
