About this product

The Shining 3D FreeScan Trak Nova is a wireless dynamic-tracking metrology system that pairs the UE Nova wide-range handheld laser scanner with the TE Nova and patented video photogrammetry (VPG), all packed in one portable case. It measures at 0.02 mm accuracy and 0.062 mm volumetric accuracy over 12 m³ (0.046 + 0.012 mm/m with VPG), certified to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360 in Shining 3D’s ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab.

Why metrology teams choose the FreeScan Trak Nova

Traceable accuracy on large parts, without a stiff CMM or a wall of markers.

Certified, traceable accuracy

0.02 mm accuracy, 0.062 mm volumetric accuracy over 12 m³ and 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m with VPG, tested to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360 in Shining 3D’s ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab.

Dynamic tracking + VPG

Real-time dynamic tracking scans most parts without markers, and patented video photogrammetry removes the need for coded markers on large objects — less setup and freedom to move around the object.

Flexible, separable system

The UE Nova works on its own as a wide-range handheld laser scanner (field of view up to 2600 × 2200 mm) and, paired with the TE Nova, as a dynamic tracking system. Fifty laser lines cover large areas; 7 parallel lines and a single line handle fine detail and deep pockets.

Wireless, large working volume

Fully wireless with a separable tracker and scanner, a field of view up to 2600 × 2200 mm, and a 3.5 m tracking range — reach into tight spaces or walk around a large assembly.

Metrology Performance

The FreeScan Trak Nova reaches 0.02 mm accuracy, 0.062 mm volumetric accuracy over 12 m³, and 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric extension accuracy with VPG, with resolution from 0.01 to 10 mm. Fifty laser lines give fast coverage; a 7-line mode adds fine detail and a single line reaches deep pockets. Accuracy is certified to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360, tested in Shining 3D’s ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab. See the full specification table below.

Dynamic Tracking & Working Range

The optical tracker follows the scanner in real time, so you move around the part instead of moving the part. The field of view reaches 2600 × 2200 mm and the tracking range is 3.5 m; Shining 3D offers Near, Standard and Far working modes for different distances. The units are light — 1.2 kg for the TE Nova and 1.6 kg for the UE Nova — and the whole system is wireless (router included), with a wired fiber-optic option.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request, typical reply within 4 hours.

What accuracy does the FreeScan Trak Nova achieve, and is it certified?
The FreeScan Trak Nova reaches 0.02 mm accuracy, 0.062 mm volumetric accuracy over 12 m³, and 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric extension accuracy with VPG. It is certified to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360, tested in Shining 3D’s ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab, and Shining 3D provides inspection reports and calibration certificates traceable to these standards.
What is VPG, and do I need to apply markers?
Dynamic tracking scans most parts without markers; Shining 3D notes markers may be recommended for very large surfaces. VPG, Shining 3D's patented video photogrammetry, eliminates the need for coded markers and uses a calibration rod for real-time marker verification, keeping volumetric accuracy consistent on large objects. The UE Nova supports a photogrammetry working distance of up to 3.5 m.
How large a part can the Trak Nova measure?
Shining 3D rates the Trak Nova series for objects from S to XL — about 150 mm to 5 m. The UE Nova field of view reaches 2600 × 2200 mm and the tracking range is 3.5 m, so you walk around the part instead of repositioning it. For larger objects, the Metrology Pro Kit supports leapfrog with different marker options.
What metrology software does it work with?
The FreeScan Trak software fuses wide-range scanning and tracked detail into one dataset and includes SHINING3D Inspect. Compatible software also includes PolyWorks Inspector, Geomagic Control X, Geomagic Design X, EXModel Pro, and BlueStar Mapping.
What is the difference between the TE Nova and UE Nova scanner heads?
The Trak Nova combines two units. The UE Nova (1.6 kg) is a handheld wide-range laser scanner with a field of view up to 2600 × 2200 mm; in the system it also serves as the tracker. The TE Nova (1.2 kg) is the scanner it tracks for detailed local features. The system can be separated, so the UE Nova also works on its own.
Is the Trak Nova wireless, and what is the battery life?
Yes. The FreeScan Trak Nova is fully wireless, with a wired fiber-optic connection as an option. Wireless mode needs a Wi-Fi router, and Shining 3D includes one in the package. Battery life in wireless mode is up to 2.5 hours on the TE Nova and about 1 hour on the UE Nova; batteries are swappable, so you keep measuring.
Can it scan reflective or dark metal surfaces?
The FreeScan Trak Nova uses blue-laser lines that capture most machined, cast, composite, and painted surfaces. Mirror-finish or highly polished surfaces may still need a light matting agent, as with any optical system. Tell us your material and finish and our applications engineer will advise.
