What your metrology engineer actually checks

Traceable to the standard

0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric accuracy, tested to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360 in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab. That is what your auditor and AS9100 process check — conformant numbers, not 'comparable to'.

An applications engineer on the line

Sample measurement of your actual parts, tracking setup, and export into PolyWorks or Geomagic — from engineers who run these systems, not a remote ticket queue. Demo before you commit. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

About this product

The Shining 3D FreeScan Trak Nova is a wireless dynamic-tracking metrology system that combines an optical tracker, a large-FOV blue-laser scanner, and patented video photogrammetry (VPG) in one case. It measures large parts markerless at up to 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric accuracy — verified in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab — from a 5 mm feature to a 50 m³ assembly.

Dynamic optical tracking scans large parts without fixed reference markers.

Why metrology teams choose the FreeScan Trak Nova

Traceable accuracy on large parts, without a stiff CMM or a wall of markers.

Certified, traceable accuracy

Up to 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric accuracy, tested to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360 in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab — the numbers your QC sign-off and auditor expect.

Markerless with VPG

Patented video photogrammetry tracks the part dynamically without coded targets stuck to the surface — less setup, no marker residue, and freedom to move around the object.

One system, three tools

A portable optical tracker, a large-FOV handheld laser scanner, and a VPG module in one case. Fifty laser lines run at 6,140,000 points/s; drop to 7 or 1 line for fine detail and deep pockets.

Wireless, large working volume

Fully wireless with a separable tracker and scanner, a field of view up to 2600 × 2200 mm, and dynamic tracking to 3.5 m — reach into tight spaces or walk around a full assembly.

How Additive Plus delivers your Trak Nova

Verified, trained, and supported for a QC workflow.

Step 01
Verify & certify

Each system is checked against its calibration artifacts and accuracy confirmed before shipment, so it meets its stated spec when it reaches your lab.

Step 02
Install & train

Onboarding on tracking setup, scan strategy, and export into PolyWorks, Geomagic, or SHINING3D Inspect — your metrology team is inspecting parts on the first job.

Step 03
Sample scan & support

Send us a representative part and we measure it first, so you see Trak Nova data on your geometry before you commit. Post-sale support with a sub-4h reply.

Metrology Performance

The FreeScan Trak Nova reaches 0.02 mm single-point accuracy and 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric accuracy with VPG, with resolution from 0.01 to 10 mm. Fifty crossed laser lines capture at 6,140,000 points/s for fast coverage; a 7-line mode adds fine detail and a single line reaches deep pockets. Accuracy is verified in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360. See the full specification table below.

Dynamic Tracking & Working Range

The optical tracker follows the scanner in real time, so you move around the part instead of moving the part. The field of view reaches 2600 × 2200 mm and dynamic tracking extends to 3.5 m, covering objects from a 5 mm feature to a 50 m³ assembly. Scanner heads are light — 1.2 kg for the TE Nova and 1.6 kg for the UE Nova — and the whole system is wireless, with a wired fiber-optic option for the highest data rates.

Software & Workflow

Data flows into the native FreeScan software and SHINING3D Inspect, and exports to established metrology packages including PolyWorks Inspector, Geomagic Control X, Geomagic Design X, and EXModel Pro. Output in STL, OBJ, PLY, and ASC drops into inspection and reverse-engineering workflows for deviation analysis, GD&T, and first-article reporting.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What accuracy does the FreeScan Trak Nova achieve, and is it certified?
The FreeScan Trak Nova reaches 0.02 mm single-point accuracy and 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m volumetric accuracy with VPG. Those figures are verified in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab to VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 and ISO 10360, so they stand up to QC sign-off and audit. We can measure a representative part for you so you see real deviation numbers on your own geometry before purchase.
What is VPG, and do I need to apply markers?
VPG is Shining 3D's patented video photogrammetry, which lets the FreeScan Trak Nova track a part dynamically without coded targets stuck to the surface. For most parts you scan markerless, which removes setup time and marker residue and lets you move freely around the object. Very large or feature-poor parts can still use reference points where needed, and our engineers help set the right strategy.
How large a part can the Trak Nova measure?
The FreeScan Trak Nova handles objects from a 5 mm feature up to a 50 m³ assembly. Its field of view reaches 2600 × 2200 mm and dynamic tracking extends to 3.5 m, so one system covers a small bracket and a full vehicle body or large casting. The optical tracker follows the scanner in real time, so you walk around the part instead of repositioning it.
What metrology software does it work with?
The FreeScan Trak Nova runs the native FreeScan software and SHINING3D Inspect, and exports to established metrology packages including PolyWorks Inspector, Geomagic Control X, Geomagic Design X, and EXModel Pro. Output in STL, OBJ, PLY, and ASC supports deviation analysis, GD&T, and first-article reporting. We configure the export path into your existing inspection software during onboarding.
What is the difference between the TE Nova and UE Nova scanner heads?
Both heads run on the same Trak Nova system. The TE Nova has a 170–550 mm working range and weighs 1.2 kg — ideal for smaller parts and tight access. The UE Nova has an 800–3500 mm working range and weighs 1.6 kg — suited to large objects scanned from a distance. Choosing between them depends on your typical part size; our engineers help you pick the right configuration.
Is the Trak Nova wireless, and what is the battery life?
The FreeScan Trak Nova is fully wireless with a separable tracker and scanner, and offers a wired fiber-optic connection when you need the highest data rate. Wireless battery life is roughly 2.5 hours on the TE Nova and about 1 hour on the UE Nova, and batteries are swappable to keep measuring. Being cable-free lets you reach into tight spaces and walk around large assemblies freely.
Can it scan reflective or dark metal surfaces?
The FreeScan Trak Nova uses blue-laser lines that capture most machined, cast, composite, and painted surfaces well, including moderately reflective metal. Mirror-finish or highly polished surfaces may still need a light matting agent for complete data, as with any optical system. Tell us your material and finish and we will confirm how the Trak Nova handles it before you buy.
