What your QC lab actually checks

Oxygen and nitrogen in metals by fusion

An 8.5 kW electrode impulse furnace melts the sample in a graphite crucible above 3,000 °C; oxygen is measured as CO₂ by infrared and nitrogen by a high-sensitivity thermal conductivity cell. A closed gas system feeds 100 % of the sample gas to the detectors for low detection limits — the oxygen and nitrogen numbers that decide quality in steel, titanium and metal AM powders. Single-element or combined ON, with inexpensive argon possible as carrier gas.

An applications engineer on the line

Mode and carrier-gas selection, gas calibration, crucible outgassing and blank control from engineers who run metal additive manufacturing in-house (AO Metal). Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

About this product

The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC ON-p 2 determines oxygen and nitrogen in metals and inorganic materials by inert gas fusion. The sample melts in a graphite crucible in a powerful 8.5 kW electrode impulse furnace above 3,000 °C; oxygen is measured as CO₂ in up to two infrared cells, while nitrogen is detected in its elemental form in a high-sensitivity thermal conductivity cell. A closed gas system feeds 100 % of the released sample gas to the detectors for low detection limits — the O and N numbers that govern quality in steel, titanium and metal AM powders.

Why metallurgy and AM labs choose the ON-p 2

Oxygen and nitrogen in metals — the fusion numbers that decide quality.

O + N by inert gas fusion

An 8.5 kW electrode impulse furnace melts the sample in a graphite crucible above 3,000 °C — oxygen is measured as CO₂ by IR and nitrogen by thermal conductivity. Single-element or combined ON.

Closed gas system, low limits

A closed gas system under overpressure feeds 100 % of the released sample gas to the detectors for low detection limits and good reproducibility — with inexpensive argon possible as carrier gas.

Sample port up to 2000 mg

Solid pieces, granules or powder in capsules load up to 2,000 mg and are freed of atmosphere by pulsed carrier-gas flushing before dropping into the crucible — robust against dust, no capsule closing needed.

Copper-oxide catalyst + Autocleaner

A copper-oxide catalyst fully oxidizes CO to CO₂ for reliable oxygen even on oxides; the optional Autocleaner removes furnace deposits for precise, high-throughput analysis.

What does the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC ON-p 2 measure?
The ELEMENTRAC ON-p 2 determines oxygen and nitrogen in metals and inorganic materials such as steel, non-ferrous metals, ceramics, slags and ores. It is available as a single-element analyzer for oxygen or nitrogen only, or in a combined ON configuration. Oxygen is measured as CO₂ in up to two infrared cells; nitrogen is measured in its elemental form in a thermal conductivity cell.
How does the inert gas fusion measurement work?
The weighed sample is placed on the sample port and flushed with carrier gas to keep atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen out of the furnace. The graphite crucible is outgassed in the impulse furnace, then the sample is dropped in and melted above 3,000 °C. Carbon in the crucible reacts with the sample's oxygen to form CO, which a copper-oxide catalyst converts to CO₂ for IR measurement; nitrogen is released in elemental form and measured by thermal conductivity. Analysis takes about 120–180 seconds.
Which carrier gas does it use?
The ON-p 2 uses helium as carrier gas to take advantage of the sensitive thermal conductivity cell for nitrogen, and the less expensive argon can be used as an option to reduce running costs. A closed gas system under overpressure ensures that 100 % of the released sample gas reaches the detectors, which keeps detection limits low. Additive Plus configures the carrier gas to your elements and material.
Is the ON-p 2 suitable for titanium and metal AM powder QC?
Yes. Oxygen and nitrogen content are critical quality parameters for titanium and other metal AM powders, because pickup during atomization, handling and reuse affects part properties. The ON-p 2 quantifies O and N by fusion with low detection limits, and its sample port takes up to 2,000 mg of powder in capsules for representative sampling. Additive Plus runs metal additive manufacturing in-house (AO Metal) and can help set up the method.
What sample sizes and automation does it offer?
The innovative sample port accepts solid pieces, granules or powder in capsules up to 2,000 mg, freed of surrounding atmosphere by pulsed carrier-gas flushing before dropping vertically into the crucible — no capsule closing required and robust against dust. An optional Autocleaner removes furnace deposits generated during melting to keep results reproducible in high-throughput operation, and a gas calibration and cleaning furnace is available.
What does the ON-p 2 need to run?
It needs helium (99.995 %), optionally argon (99.995 %) and compressed air, an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. It runs on three-phase 400 V, 50/60 Hz (max 8,500 W) for the 8.5 kW impulse furnace. Options include carrier-gas purification, an external chiller and a gas calibration unit. The analyzer measures about 570 × 770 × 630 mm and weighs ~161 kg.
What is the lead time, and can Additive Plus set it up?
The ELEMENTRAC ON-p 2 is configured to order; request a quote for the current lead time. Additive Plus is an authorized ELTRA / Verder Scientific channel and handles installation, three-phase power and gas connection, calibration and operator training, then helps build your oxygen/nitrogen SOP. You can also send a sample for a paid measurement first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.
