The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CS-d combines an induction furnace (above 2,000 °C) and a resistance furnace (up to 1,550 °C) in one instrument — ELTRA’s Dual Furnace (EDF) Technology. It determines carbon and sulfur in both inorganic samples (steel, cast iron, ceramics) and organic samples (coal, coke, soil) from the ppm range up to 100 %, using up to four independent infrared cells with gold IR paths. What makes the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CS-d different?
The ELEMENTRAC CS-d is a dual-furnace carbon and sulfur analyzer: it combines an induction furnace (above 2,000 °C) and a resistance furnace (to 1,550 °C) in one instrument, using ELTRA's Dual Furnace (EDF) Technology. That lets one analyzer measure carbon and sulfur in both inorganic samples (steel, cast iron, ceramics) and organic samples (coal, coke, soil), which normally require two separate instruments.
How does the measurement work in each furnace?
In both furnaces, carbon and sulfur form CO₂ and SO₂ during combustion, which are measured in up to four element-selective infrared cells — usually two cells per gas for both low and high concentrations. The induction furnace melts metals with a high oxygen flow and uses a heated catalyst to fully oxidize CO to CO₂; the resistance furnace combusts organics at up to ~1,350 °C, where CO is usually not formed, so the catalyst can be switched off. The ELEMENTS software calculates the results.
What is the measuring range and IR configuration?
The latest detector technology gives a wide range from the ppm range to 100 % in both furnaces. Up to four independent infrared cells are used, and for optimum measurement of low and high concentrations two IR cells per element are recommended — a longer cuvette gives higher sensitivity for low levels such as 10 ppm. Gold cuvettes are installed as standard for reliability on halogen-containing samples, and a halogen trap is available for very high halogen levels.
How does the CS-d handle difficult powder samples?
The induction furnace runs above 2,000 °C with a high oxygen flow (about 180 L/hour) so solid samples are fully decomposed. Because powder can splash out of the crucible and read low, the CS-d uses intelligent lance and combustion management: oxygen is dosed via a lance or through the chamber to prevent blowing the sample, and the furnace power ramps up gradually for gentle, complete combustion. A low-blank resistance sample port supports reliable low-carbon analysis.
What options and automation are available?
The induction furnace can take an optional autoloader with 36 or 130 crucible positions. Further options include an HTF-540 pre-heating furnace, carrier-gas purification, a halogen trap and a TIC module that determines total inorganic carbon by acidification in soil and construction materials. A special configuration for cement analysis is also available. Additive Plus configures these to your application.
What does the CS-d need to run?
It needs oxygen at 99.5 % purity (2–4 bar) and compressed air (4–6 bar), an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. The induction furnace uses 230 V with a 16 A fuse and the resistance furnace 230 V with a 20 A fuse. It is a larger instrument — about 890 × 840 × 790 mm and ~200 kg — so plan bench space and power accordingly.
