What the BELCRYO X is

The BELCRYO X is a cryostat from Microtrac — an accessory that replaces the liquid nitrogen or argon Dewar on a BELSORP gas adsorption analyzer. A Gifford-McMahon cryocooler with a heater holds the sample cells at any set temperature from 35 K to 473 K, so isotherms are no longer tied to 77.4 K for LN2 or 87.3 K for liquid argon, and long measurements have no time limit.

It connects to the BELSORP MAX X (including the HP version), the BELSORP MAX G and the BELSORP MINI X, and is controlled from the same BELControl software, fully automated from pretreatment to measurement. Up to three samples are measured at the same time.

What it lets your BELSORP measure

The datasheet examples, run on a BELSORP MAX X with activated carbon and FAU zeolite:

N2 at 77.4 K, Ar at 87.3 K BET surface area and pore size distribution without filling a Dewar
CO2 at 273 K and 194.7 K pore analysis and CO2 uptake for capture and separation materials
Kr at 119.7 K krypton isotherms at a temperature a liquid coolant cannot give
H2 at 35 K and 40 K hydrogen storage on activated carbon under cryogenic conditions
Isosteric heat from isotherms at several temperatures, for example 77.4, 82.4 and 87.4 K, or H2 at 35 and 40 K
With XRPD coupled measurement on powders to watch gated adsorption and phase transitions

Combined with the BELSORP MAX X HP, hydrogen and methane storage and CO2 separation isotherms can be measured from cryogenic to high temperature and from low to high pressure.

Three kinds of studies it opens

Gas storageHydrogen and methane uptake of MOFs, zeolites and carbons at low temperature, measured at the exact temperature of interest.
Carbon capture and separationCO2 isotherms for CCUS / CCS and gas separation materials across a broad temperature range.
Heat of adsorptionDifferential isosteric heats from isotherms measured at closely spaced temperatures, with the stability to make the calculation reliable.

Where the BELCRYO X stops — and what to take instead

The BELCRYO X does not measure on its own — it needs a BELSORP MAX X, MAX G or MINI X; for older BELSORP MAX or MAX II analyzers Microtrac asks to be contacted first. It holds three samples in its own 1.8 cm³ copper cells, and its pressure rating is below 1 MPa (G). The compressor is a separate 75 kg unit on AC 100–120 V, so plan floor space and power. If your work is routine BET at 77 K, a Dewar is enough and you do not need it. Microtrac notes that the product may fall under Japanese export control depending on destination and use.

What usually stops people — and the honest answer

“Liquid nitrogen is cheap.”For routine 77 K work it is, and then you do not need a BELCRYO X. It pays off when you need other temperatures — CO2 at 194.7 K, hydrogen at 35 K, isotherms for isosteric heat — or very long runs without refilling.
“Will it work with our analyzer?”It is specified for the BELSORP MAX X including HP versions, MAX G and MINI X. For a BELSORP MAX or MAX II, Microtrac checks first. We confirm before the quotation.
“How stable is the temperature?”±0.001 K below 100 K and ±0.01 K at 100 K and above, achieved with a vacuum-insulated chamber and radiation shielding.
“How long does it take to cool down?”From 298 K to 35 K in less than 120 minutes, as a reference value; after that measurements can run continuously with no time limit.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

What does the BELCRYO X do for a BELSORP analyzer?
It replaces the liquid nitrogen or argon Dewar with a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler and heater, so adsorption isotherms can be measured at any temperature from 35 K to 473 K. Measurements are not limited by a Dewar's holding time.
Which BELSORP analyzers is it compatible with?
The BELSORP MAX X including HP versions, the MAX G and the MINI X, all controlled through BELControl. For the older BELSORP MAX or MAX II, Microtrac asks to be contacted first. We confirm compatibility with your analyzer before quoting.
How stable is the temperature control?
±0.001 K below 100 K and ±0.01 K at 100 K and above. The stability comes from a vacuum-insulated chamber and radiation shielding.
What studies does the temperature range make possible?
Datasheet examples include CO₂ at 194.7 K, Kr at 119.7 K, hydrogen on activated carbon at 35 K and 40 K, and isosteric heat of adsorption from isotherms at several temperatures. It is used for MOF and zeolite gas storage, CCUS / CCS and gas separation research, and can be coupled with X-ray powder diffraction.
How many samples and which gases?
Three samples at once, in copper CRYO cells of 1.8 cm³. Measurable gases are N₂, Ar, Kr, Xe, CO₂, H₂, CH₄, CO and other non-corrosive gases; pressure resistance is below 1 MPa (G).
What does it need in the lab?
The BELCRYO X is 450 × 590 × 360 mm and 50 kg on AC 100–240 V, 1200 VA. The separate compressor is 320 × 610 × 450 mm and 75 kg on AC 100–120 V, 1500 VA. Cooling from 298 K to 35 K takes less than 120 minutes as a reference value.
What is the lead time and what is included?
The BELCRYO X is configured to order and matched to your BELSORP. Lead time is from 4 weeks after a confirmed order, depending on the configuration, and the formal quotation states the date. Installation and on-site operator training by Microtrac's US service engineers are included in every quotation.
How much does a BELCRYO X cost?
The price depends on your analyzer and the cells and consumables you need. Request a formal quotation and you receive configuration, price, payment terms and lead time on our letterhead.
Can we see data on our material first?
Yes. The test analysis of your sample is free; it is measured in Microtrac's US application lab and we go through the report with you before you decide.
