What the BELSORP MINI X is

The BELSORP MINI X is Microtrac’s compact volumetric analyzer for specific surface area, pore size distribution and pore volume. Up to four samples are measured at the same time, and because every sample port has its own pressure sensor and the saturation vapor pressure has its own port, the four measurements run fully independently of each other.

The isotherm starts at P/P0 ≈ 10−4, which covers BET surface area and mesopores. The patented AFSM™ method follows free-space changes in an empty reference cell during the run, so the liquid nitrogen level does not have to be held constant; AFSM™2 measures without helium. In Microtrac’s test on the certified alumina reference BCR-170 the BET result stayed at 1.02–1.03 m²/g while the total surface in the cell fell from about 2 m² to 0.4 m² — the basis for measuring low-area samples with nitrogen instead of krypton.

What it tells you about a powder

The datasheet names catalysts, battery materials, zeolites, ceramics, carbon, cement, silica, pigments, toners and pharmaceuticals among its fields. The MINI X reports:

BET surface area multi-point or single-point, per ISO 9277; Annex C (Rouquerol plot) for microporous materials
Mesopores and macropores BJH, DH, CI and INNES pore size distributions above 2 nm, up to 500 nm
Pore volume t-plot and αs plot, from ultra-micropores to meso- and macropores
Micropores MP and Dubinin-Astakhov methods; molecular probe option from 0.35 nm; NLDFT / GCMC with BELSim
Low-area samples nitrogen down to about 0.1 m² total surface in the cell — BCR-170 alumina (certified 1.05 ± 0.05 m²/g) measured 1.02–1.03 m²/g
Quick BET check two samples gave 190.5 and 77.4 m²/g in Quick BET against 189.9 and 75.7 m²/g in a full isotherm

Three ways to run it

High-precision modeThree samples are measured and an empty reference cell follows the free space by AFSM™. For development work and small sample amounts.
Multi-sample modeAll four ports measure samples, with each port’s own pressure sensor and the p0 measured on its dedicated port. For routine work on many samples.
Quick BET modeA three-point BET of several samples in about 15 minutes, with results comparable to the full isotherm. For quality control throughput.

Gas Dosing Optimization loads an earlier isotherm and sets the dosing automatically, which shortens repeat measurements of similar samples. Up to five MINI X units — 20 measuring ports — can be run from one PC.

Where the MINI X stops — and what to take instead

The MINI X uses 133 kPa transducers only, so its isotherms start at P/P0 ≈ 10−4. That is enough for BET and mesopores, but not for detailed micropore analysis of zeolites, MOFs or activated carbons: for that take the BELSORP MAX G (one sample, from 10−8, with krypton) or the BELSORP MAX X (four samples, from 10−8, plus water and organic vapors). Krypton is not in the MINI X gas list. For a single-point BET value with automatic pretreatment there is the BELSORP MR 1. Pores above 500 nm need mercury porosimetry on the BELPORE. To degas samples while the MINI X measures, add a BELPREP VAC; for isotherms at other temperatures, the BELCRYO X connects to the MINI X.

What usually stops people — and the honest answer

“Our samples have low surface area — don’t we need krypton?”Often not. With AFSM™ the MINI X measures low-area samples with nitrogen down to about 0.1 m² total surface in the cell. Below that, krypton on the MAX G or MAX X is the answer.
“Will one slow sample hold up the others?”No. Each sample port has its own pressure transducer and the saturation pressure has its own port, so the four measurements are fully independent.
“We are a regulated lab.”FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliance is available as an option, and BELCONTROL’s Simple Mode lets operators run a measurement with only sample data, pretreatment and range.
“We are not sure the MINI X is enough.”If your material has micropores below about 2 nm, it probably is not. Send a sample — the test analysis is free — and the isotherm shows whether you need the MINI X or a MAX model.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request, typical reply within 4 hours.

How does the BELSORP MINI X differ from the BELSORP MAX X?
The MINI X measures up to four samples from P/P₀ ≈ 10⁻⁴ with 133 kPa transducers — BET surface area and mesopores. The MAX X also measures up to four samples but starts at P/P₀ = 10⁻⁸ with additional low-pressure transducers, resolves pores from 0.35 nm, measures krypton down to 0.0005 m²/g and adds water and organic vapor isotherms. Choose the MINI X for routine BET and mesopore work, the MAX X for micropores and vapors.
What surface area and pore size range does it cover?
BET surface area from 0.01 m²/g with nitrogen, depending on sample density. Pore size distribution from 0.7 to 500 nm; with the optional molecular probe method from 0.35 nm.
What does helium-free measurement change in practice?
With AFSM™2 the free space of a blank sample cell and reference cell is measured with the adsorptive gas in advance, and the adsorption measurement then runs without helium. Several steps of the helium method are skipped, so measurements are shorter, and the coolant level does not need to be matched between blank and sample.
Are the four ports really independent?
Yes. Each sample port has its own 133 kPa pressure transducer and the saturation vapor pressure is measured on a dedicated port, so the measurements run simultaneously and independently. In High Accuracy mode three ports measure samples and one holds the reference cell.
Which gases and analysis methods are supported?
Gases: N₂, Ar, CH₄, C₂H₆, CO₂, H₂, n-butane, iso-butane and other non-corrosive gases. BELMASTER 7 calculates BET (including Type I per ISO 9277) and Langmuir surface area, BJH, DH, CI and INNES distributions, t-plot, αs plot, MP and Dubinin-Astakhov methods and the molecular probe method. NLDFT / GCMC is optional through BELSim.
How compact is it and what does it need?
The main unit is 280 × 650 × 465 mm and 38 kg, without vacuum pump and PC. It runs on single-phase AC 100–240 V, 10 A including the rotary pump, needs helium and nitrogen of 99.999 % purity at 0.1 MPa, and a liquid nitrogen Dewar (2 L, 30 h holding time).
What is the lead time and what is included?
The MINI X is configured to order. Lead time is from 4 weeks after a confirmed order, depending on the configuration, and the formal quotation states the date. Installation and on-site operator training by Microtrac's US service engineers are included in every quotation.
How much does a BELSORP MINI X cost?
The price depends on the 3- or 4-port model and the options — molecular probe, NLDFT / GCMC, 21 CFR Part 11, heater, water bath, gas selector. Request a formal quotation and you receive configuration, price, payment terms and lead time on our letterhead.
Can I test my sample before buying?
Yes, and the test analysis is free. Send a representative sample; it is measured in Microtrac's US application lab and you receive the report, which we go through with you before you decide.
Can the MINI X measure low surface areas without krypton?
Within limits, yes. Microtrac measured the certified alumina reference BCR-170 (1.05 ± 0.05 m²/g) with nitrogen and got 1.02–1.03 m²/g with only 2 m² down to 0.4 m² of total surface in the cell; the stated limit is about 0.1 m² total surface. Below that, krypton on a BELSORP MAX G or MAX X is needed.
