What your R&D lab actually checks
The third dimension
Tracking each particle through up to 30 images gives true length, width and thickness — the flatness and elongation that flow, packing and product quality depend on, which a 2D projection hides.

What the CAMSIZER 3D is
The CAMSIZER 3D is a dynamic image analyzer from Microtrac for dry, free-flowing bulk solids and powders. The sample runs down a vibrating feeder and tumbles as it falls through the measuring zone, lit from behind by an LED strobe. Two cameras — a 9 MP ZOOM camera for the fine particles and a 5 MP BASIC camera for the coarse ones — follow each particle and record up to 30 images of it in different orientations. From this particle track the software takes the largest length as the 3D length, the largest width as the 3D width and the smallest width as the 3D thickness. In 2D mode it works like a conventional image analyzer, with results compatible with sieve analysis.

What 3D shows that a 2D image hides
A conventional image analyzer sees each particle once, in a random orientation: its “length” is a mix of true length and width, its “width” a mix of width and thickness. Microtrac’s own examples show what changes when every particle is tracked:
| Extrudates | ceramic rods 6–8 mm long: 3D length matched caliper measurement; 2D length came out too short |
| Coffee beans | separate, correct distributions of length, width and thickness |
| Glass beads | fused and deformed beads: 3D mode found more elongated particles than 2D — a 17% difference in that example |
| Fertilizer | granules turning ellipsoidal while the diameter stays the same — seen in roundness and aspect ratio, missed by sieving |
| Pharmaceutical pellets | coating differences of only 2.5 µm detected reliably |
In 2D mode the particle width xc min lines up with sieve analysis. In Microtrac’s foundry sand application note, three sands between 63 and 500 µm followed their sieve curves closely, and three repeat runs agreed within 1% at the d50.
Options that change how you work
Where the CAMSIZER 3D stops — and what to take instead
The CAMSIZER 3D measures dry, free-flowing material from 20 µm. Powders that do not flow freely, suspensions and fine cuts that start below 20 µm — typical LPBF metal powder such as 15–45 µm among them — belong on the CAMSIZER X2+, from 0.9 µm with air, gravity or wet dispersion. Particles above 30 mm go to the CAMSIZER XL, up to 135 mm. If you need laser diffraction down to 0.01 µm and image analysis in one measurement, look at the Microtrac SYNC. For measurement close to production, there is the CAMSIZER ONLINE.
