The ELTRA SurfaceC-800 determines surface carbon on solid samples quickly and precisely. The sample is placed in a quartz boat and pushed into a resistance furnace (adjustable to 1,000 °C); the combustion gas passes a copper-oxide catalyst and the released CO₂ is measured by infrared cells. With minimal preparation and a 60–90 second analysis, it quantifies surface carbon — from lubricant residues to carburization — on steel, aluminum and ceramics up to 32×145 mm.

What does the ELTRA SurfaceC-800 measure?
The SurfaceC-800 determines surface carbon on solid samples — from trace level up to 1,000 µg/cm². It is not a bulk analyzer: it quantifies the carbon present on the surface of a part, such as lubricant residue, organic contamination or carburization. This is a key quality-control requirement in the metal-producing and metal-working industries, and it also applies to ceramics and additive-manufactured parts.
How does the measurement work?
You enter the sample surface area, place the part in a quartz boat and push it into the hot zone of a resistance furnace set up to 1,000 °C. The combustion gas passes a copper-oxide catalyst so all carbon converts to CO₂, which is then measured by infrared cells. An external PC controls the process and calculates the result. A determination takes only about 60 to 90 seconds.
What sample sizes and materials can it handle?
The SurfaceC-800 accepts large solid samples up to 32×145 mm with minimal preparation — no grinding or digestion. It is used on steel, aluminum, ceramics and other metals. For samples containing halogens or acids, an optional gold IR path protects the optics, and a special sample sluice reduces the atmospheric blank for cleaner low-level results.
How is it calibrated?
Calibration is easy, with certified standard materials or a gas dose, and supports both single-point and multipoint calibration. One or two infrared cells can be combined to give a wide dynamic range, and electronic gas-flow control keeps conditions stable. What does it need to run?
The SurfaceC-800 needs oxygen at 99.5% purity (2–4 bar), an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. It runs on 230 V (max 10 A, 2,300 W) and uses magnesium perchlorate and sodium hydroxide as reagents. A 5 kVA voltage stabilizer is available as an option for unstable supplies. It is robust and low-maintenance, suitable for both the lab and production control.
Is the SurfaceC-800 suitable for additive manufacturing QC?
It can be. Surface carbon pickup on metal AM parts or on feedstock handling surfaces can affect downstream processing and joining, and the SurfaceC-800 quantifies it quickly with little preparation.
