What the A100 is

The A100 is the largest machine in the AO Metal line: a floor-standing LPBF printer with a Ø100 × 100 mm (3.9 × 3.9 in) build envelope, for parts that no longer fit a research machine and for short production runs. A fiber laser melts metal powder directly into fully dense parts in one step; the optional 445 nm blue laser opens up copper, gold and silver, and the optional 900 °C platform takes on materials that crack when printed cold. The system is fully open: sixteen alloys proven to date with the list still open, all process parameters in your hands, and the validated print programs handed over with the machine.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request, typical reply within 4 hours.

What is the AO Metal A100 Metal 3D Printer?
The AO Metal A100 is a floor-standing LPBF (laser powder bed fusion) metal 3D printer with a Ø100 × 100 mm build envelope, the largest in the AO Metal line. It is built for research, engineering, education and small-series production, every process parameter is open to the user, and it starts at $99,000.
How does the AO Metal A100 work?
The A100 uses Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), also known as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), to selectively melt thin layers of metal powder with a high-power laser. Each layer is fused to the previous one until the finished metal component is complete.
What is the difference between LPBF and DMLS?
LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) are commonly used to describe the same metal additive manufacturing process. Both technologies use a laser to fuse metal powder layer by layer into fully dense, functional parts.
What is the price of the AO Metal A100?
The AO Metal A100 starts at $99,000 for the 300 W configuration. Higher-power models with optional features such as the blue laser and 900°C heated build platform are available through custom quotations.
What materials can the AO Metal A100 print?
Sixteen alloys are proven to date, and the list is not closed: stainless 316L and 17-4PH, Inconel 625 and 718, Ti-6Al-4V and TiAl, AlSi10Mg and 6061, cobalt chrome, tool steels H13 and M300, copper and CuCrZr, tungsten, tantalum, niobium and molybdenum, gold, silver and platinum, and high-entropy alloys. Copper and precious metals need the optional 445 nm blue laser. Because the system is open, you can also qualify your own powder.
Can the AO Metal A100 print copper?
Yes, with the optional 445 nm, 250 W blue laser. Copper, CuCrZr, gold and silver reflect most of the infrared light of a standard fiber laser and absorb blue light far better, so the blue laser is the configuration to choose for them.
Can the AO Metal A100 print titanium?
Yes. The A100 is fully compatible with titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64), making it suitable for aerospace, medical, engineering, and research applications that require lightweight, high-strength components.
Can the AO Metal A100 print stainless steel?
Yes. The system supports multiple stainless steel grades commonly used for tooling, industrial components, research, and production applications, allowing users to manufacture strong, corrosion-resistant parts.
Is the AO Metal A100 an open material system?
Yes. Unlike closed metal 3D printers that require proprietary powders and fixed process parameters, the AO Metal A100 allows users to modify laser settings, scan strategies, build parameters, and use powders from multiple qualified suppliers.
Can I develop custom metal alloys on the AO Metal A100?
Yes. The A100 is specifically designed for alloy development and material research. Users can create custom metal powders, characterize them, and manufacture finished components using the same open platform.
What industries use the AO Metal A100?
The A100 is built for university and national-lab research groups, corporate R&D teams and small-series producers who have outgrown a research-size build plate. Typical work: alloy development and qualification, test specimens, copper and precious-metal parts with the optional blue laser, and short production runs of parts up to Ø100 × 100 mm.
What accuracy can the AO Metal A100 achieve?
The A100 produces fully dense parts with approximately ±0.1% dimensional accuracy, depending on the selected material, geometry, and process parameters. Layer thicknesses from 15 to 100 microns allow both high-resolution and higher-throughput production.
What is the build volume of the AO Metal A100?
The printer offers a build volume of Ø100 × 100 mm, making it the largest system in the AO Metal product family while remaining compact enough for laboratory and research environments.
How fast can the AO Metal A100 print?
Scanning runs at up to 12 m/s through a galvo scan head with an F-theta lens. The laser spot is 75 µm, with 55 µm as an option.
How long does it take to change materials?
About three hours on the A100. A material change means emptying and cleaning the powder path and loading the new powder; the tools for it come with the machine.
What power requirements does the AO Metal A100 have?
The 300 W model operates on standard 110 V single-phase power, while the 500 W and 1000 W models require 220 V three-phase power. This flexibility makes the system suitable for a wide range of research laboratories and manufacturing facilities.
Does the AO Metal A100 require inert gas?
Yes. The build runs under argon, with consumption under 2 L/min in process. Plan an argon supply at installation; our US team covers facility and gas planning.
What software is included with the AO Metal A100?
Every system includes AO Build Studio software for build preparation, slicing, machine control, and parameter management. The software supports STL files and provides complete access to process settings.
Is the AO Metal A100 made in the USA?
Yes. The AO Metal A100 is designed and manufactured in the United States, providing customers with domestic engineering support, installation, training, and responsive technical service.
What is included with the purchase?
AO Build Studio and AO Build Slicer with proven parameter sets for the alloys you order; build plate, powder dispenser, filters, seals and the tools for a material change; installation and operator training with a named engineer on the account; and a 12-month warranty on the laser, scanner, blower, motors and electrical systems.
Can I finance a metal 3D printer?
Yes. Financing and leasing options are available, making it easier for universities, research labs, manufacturers, and engineering organizations to invest in industrial metal additive manufacturing equipment.
Who should buy the AO Metal A100?
The AO Metal A100 is ideal for organizations that need a fully open LPBF metal 3D printer for material development, engineering research, education, prototype production, tooling, dental applications, and low-volume manufacturing.
Can I schedule a live demonstration?
Yes. You can schedule a live demonstration, discuss your application with an Additive Plus applications engineer, and receive a customized system configuration based on your materials, production goals, and research requirements before purchasing.
