What your QC lab actually checks

Automated TGA, manual crucible lids

The TGA Thermostep ML runs the same automated moisture/ash/volatiles cycle on up to 19 samples plus a reference, 50–1,000 °C, with an encapsulated 0.1 mg balance. Crucible lids are handled manually rather than automatically — a lower-cost route to ASTM D 7582-compliant coal and coke analysis and LOI on many materials.

About this product

The ELTRA TGA Thermostep ML is the manual-lid version of the Thermostep thermogravimetric analyzer. It combines a programmable furnace with an integrated balance to measure moisture, ash and volatiles in one automated run, on up to 19 samples plus a reference, at 50–1,000 °C. Crucible lids are placed and removed by hand during the analysis — a more economical route to standard-compliant coal and coke analysis with the same precise weighing.

Why QC labs choose the TGA Thermostep ML

The same automated thermogravimetry, with manual crucible lids for a lower-cost route.

19 samples in one run

A carousel takes up to 19 crucibles plus a reference (500 mg–5 g each). Weigh in place or load a pre-weighed carousel — high throughput without manual oven-and-balance cycling.

Moisture, ash & volatiles together

A programmable ceramic furnace (50–1,000 °C in 1 °C steps) determines all three in one cycle. Crucible lids are applied and removed manually for ASTM D 7582-compliant coal and coke volatiles.

Selectable atmospheres

Choose nitrogen, oxygen or ambient air at each stage of the analysis to oxidize or protect the sample exactly when the method requires it.

Precise, reference-corrected weighing

An encapsulated weighing cell (0.1 mg resolution) with a dedicated reference crucible that compensates crucible weight loss at high temperature — stable, accurate results.

How Additive Plus supports it

A configured, installed analyzer with your TGA methods ready to run.

Step 01
Configure to your samples

We set up the SOPs — temperatures, atmospheres and heating stages — for your material and standard before it ships.

Step 02
Install & train

Factory-trained engineers install, connect the gases and exhaust, and train your team on weighing, lid handling and results.

Step 03
Method & QC support

We help validate the method against your standard — ASTM D 7582, LOI or dry-mass/ash — for a repeatable workflow.

How is the TGA Thermostep ML different from the TGA Thermostep?
They share the same thermogravimetric platform — a programmable furnace, integrated balance, up to 19 samples, 50–1,000 °C and the same measured parameters. The difference is the crucible lids: on the TGA Thermostep ML they are placed and removed manually during the analysis, whereas the standard TGA Thermostep handles them automatically. The ML is therefore a more economical option where an operator can manage the lids.
What does the TGA Thermostep ML measure?
It determines moisture, ash and volatiles — and loss on ignition — by heating samples in a programmable furnace while continuously weighing them on an integrated balance. Because heating and weighing are combined in one instrument, all these parameters come from a single automated run, replacing manual work with laboratory ovens and muffle furnaces on inorganic, organic and synthetic samples.
How many samples can it run at once?
Up to 19 samples plus one reference crucible per cycle, at typical weights of 500 mg to 5 g. Position 20 is reserved for the reference crucible, which compensates for crucible weight loss at high temperature and prevents that physical effect from biasing results. You can weigh each sample in place or load a carousel weighed externally; a full analysis takes about four hours, unattended.
Is it compliant for coal and coke analysis?
Yes. With the crucible lids applied and removed manually at the correct stages, the TGA Thermostep ML performs standard-compliant determination of volatiles in coal and coke to ASTM D 7582, along with moisture and ash. The programmable furnace and selectable nitrogen, oxygen or air atmospheres let you build the exact heating and gas profile the method requires.
Which materials and standards is it used for?
The TGA Thermostep ML handles samples across agriculture, chemistry and plastics, coal and power, construction materials, environment and recycling, food, geology and mining, glass and ceramics, and pharmaceuticals. It is ASTM D 7582 compliant for coal proximate analysis and widely used for loss on ignition on building materials and dry-mass and ash content on food and feed.
What does it need to run?
The TGA Thermostep ML needs a PC and monitor, an external exhaust (100 mm, blower ~4 m³/min), and the gases your method uses — oxygen and/or nitrogen at 99.9% (2–4 bar) and air at 99.5% (5–6 bar). It runs on 230 V (max 32 A). The encapsulated weighing cell (0.1 mg resolution) is isolated from the ambient atmosphere for stable, precise results.
What is the lead time, and can Additive Plus set it up?
The TGA Thermostep ML is configured to order; request a quote for the current lead time. Additive Plus is an authorized ELTRA / Verder Scientific channel and handles installation, gas and exhaust connection, and operator training, then validates the SOP against your standard — ASTM D 7582, LOI or ash. You can also send samples for a paid measurement first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.
