Heat treatment

Carpenter datasheet, process guidance

  • Solution anneal per AMS5662: about 971 °C (1780 °F) for about 1 hour, air cool.
  • Age: 718 °C (1325 °F) for 8 hours, cool at 56 °C (100 °F) per hour to 621 °C (1150 °F), hold at least 8 hours, air cool.
  • HIP to close porosity: 100 MPa at about 1141 °C for 240 minutes in argon, then solution anneal and age.
  • As-built 718 already has useful strength; solution and age bring it to the AMS5662 range.

Will it run on my printer?

The 45–106 µm E cut is made for electron-beam powder bed fusion and powder-fed directed energy deposition. For laser powder bed fusion, use the 15–45 µm F cut listed above. Check the particle-size range your machine maker specifies.

Step 1

Store sealed

Keep the container closed, dry and at room temperature until you load the printer.

Step 2

Sieve

Sieve before loading and every time you reuse powder recovered from a build.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request.

Is this Inconel 718 powder powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)?
No. PowderRange 718 (Inconel 718) powder (45–106 µm) is the coarse 45–106 µm E cut, made for electron-beam powder bed fusion and powder-fed directed energy deposition. Carpenter's limits for the E cut are no more than 10 wt% above 106 µm and no more than 10 wt% below 45 µm. For laser powder bed fusion, choose the 15–45 µm F cut of PowderRange 718, listed in the table at the top of this page with its price and availability.
What is PowderRange 718 (Inconel 718) powder (45–106 µm)?
PowderRange 718 (Inconel 718) powder (45–106 µm) is the workhorse age-hardenable nickel superalloy, vacuum induction melted and argon gas atomized by Carpenter Additive to ASTM F3055. It offers high yield, tensile and creep-rupture strength up to 704 °C (1300 °F). In Carpenter's tests, laser powder bed fusion parts reached 1,086 MPa yield and 1,425 MPa tensile strength in the X–Y direction after solution treatment and aging.
How is Inconel 718 heat treated after printing?
Carpenter's guidance for PowderRange 718: solution anneal per AMS5662 at about 971 °C (1780 °F) for about 1 hour and air cool; age at 718 °C (1325 °F) for 8 hours, furnace cool at 56 °C (100 °F) per hour to 621 °C (1150 °F) and hold at least 8 hours before air cooling. HIP at about 1141 °C and 100 MPa for 240 minutes, before solution and aging, closes porosity.
Inconel 718 or Inconel 625: which should I choose?
Choose 718 when strength matters most: it is age-hardenable and holds strength up to 704 °C (1300 °F). Choose 625 for corrosion resistance and toughness: Carpenter rates 625 excellent in sea water and sour oil and gas, where 718 is moderate in sea water, and 625 works from cryogenic temperatures to 1093 °C (2000 °F). Both are in our catalog with published prices and Carpenter data.
Where is PowderRange 718 made?
Carpenter runs powder plants in more than one country, and we have not yet seen a lot certificate for this 45–106 µm cut. If your program requires a specific country of melt or atomization, ask us before ordering and we will confirm it in writing for the lot you will receive. The certificate for your lot, with chemistry and particle size distribution, comes with your order.
Does Inconel 718 powder come with a certificate of analysis?
Yes. Every order of PowderRange 718 (Inconel 718) powder (45–106 µm) ships with Carpenter Additive's certificate of analysis for the lot you receive. It lists chemistry, particle size distribution (D10, D50, D90), flow and apparent density, with the lot number for traceability. Carpenter states that its powder testing meets Nadcap Materials Testing and ISO/IEC 17025 chemical requirements. If your quality team needs to review a recent certificate before you order, ask us and we will send one.
How fast does Inconel 718 powder ship, and how can I pay?
Add PowderRange 718 (Inconel 718) powder (45–106 µm) to the cart and the ship date appears next to the button; in-stock Carpenter powder ships from US stock, typically within 2–5 business days. You can pay by card or PayPal, choose Invoice me at checkout to receive an invoice for bank transfer, or send a purchase order to [email protected]. Tax-exempt buyers can upload a certificate at checkout. For 100 kg or more, ask us for a volume quote.
