What your QC lab actually checks

Carbon, hydrogen and sulfur in one run

Combustion in a resistance furnace to 1,550 °C, with a heated H₂O infrared cell followed by additional gold infrared cells, determines carbon, hydrogen and sulfur simultaneously from 20 ppm to 100 %. An optimized low-blank sample port with reduced diameter and oxygen purge drastically lowers the atmospheric CO₂ blank, so even low-carbon organic samples are measured reliably. An optional second furnace adds fast fractionated analysis.

An applications engineer on the line

IR-cell and hydrogen-cell configuration, low-blank port setup, calibration and blank control from engineers who run materials characterization in-house. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.

About this product

The ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CHS-r is a resistance-furnace analyzer for fast, simultaneous carbon, hydrogen and sulfur in predominantly organic matrices. The sample is burned in oxygen at up to 1,550 °C; the combustion gases first pass a heated H₂O infrared cell for hydrogen, then the CO₂ and SO₂ are measured in additional infrared cells over a wide range from 20 ppm to 100 %. An optimized low-blank sample port and solid-gold IR paths give reliable low-carbon analysis and extended cell life.

Why materials and environmental labs choose the CHS-r

Carbon, hydrogen and sulfur in one run — down to low ppm, up to 100 %.

Simultaneous C/H/S

Fast, simultaneous carbon, hydrogen and sulfur in a resistance furnace up to 1,550 °C, with high sample weights for heterogeneous organic matrices.

Heated H₂O IR cell for hydrogen

A dedicated heated water infrared cell captures the hydrogen as H₂O directly after the furnace, adding hydrogen to the carbon and sulfur determination.

Low-blank port, 20 ppm–100 %

A reduced-diameter sample port with oxygen purge drastically lowers the atmospheric CO₂ blank, enabling reliable carbon analysis in the low measuring range down to 20 ppm.

Gold IR path, dual-furnace + TIC

Solid-gold IR paths extend cell life, two drying columns protect the optics, and options include a second furnace for fractionated analysis and a TIC module.

What does the ELTRA ELEMENTRAC CHS-r measure?
The ELEMENTRAC CHS-r determines carbon, hydrogen and sulfur simultaneously in predominantly organic matrices — coal, coke, fuels, oil, plant materials, plastics, rubber, soil and waste. It burns the sample in oxygen in a resistance furnace up to 1,550 °C and measures the released H₂O, CO₂ and SO₂ by infrared absorption, over a wide range from 20 ppm to 100 %. It is the CS-r with a dedicated hydrogen channel added.
How is hydrogen measured?
After combustion, the gases (CO₂, H₂O, SO₂) pass a dust filter and then a heated H₂O infrared cell, which measures the water released from the sample's hydrogen before the water vapor is chemically absorbed. The dried CO₂ and SO₂ are then measured in additional infrared cells. Combining up to three infrared cells with different sensitivities gives simultaneous carbon, hydrogen and sulfur in about 60–180 seconds.
How does the low-blank sample port help?
The CHS-r (and CS-r) series uses an optimized sample port with reduced diameter and an oxygen purge at the sample inlet. This drastically reduces the atmospheric CO₂ blank value during sample introduction, which is what makes reliable carbon analysis possible in the low measuring range — down to 20 ppm — on organic samples where the blank would otherwise dominate the result.
Can the CHS-r run TOC and TIC?
Yes. For TOC analysis a chemical tube can be used as a halogen trap to absorb acid residues and halogens. Combined with ELTRA's TIC module, the analyzer determines total inorganic carbon by acidification, enabling direct TIC analysis in soils, building materials and other products in compliance with DIN EN 15936. Additive Plus configures the TIC option to your application.
What is the dual-furnace option?
The CHS-r can be connected to an additional furnace without detectors — the ELTRA Dual Furnace Concept, also known from the ELEMENTRAC CS-d. This allows fast fractionated analysis by applying different temperatures, and provides throughput and safety for high sample volumes. It is useful when you need to separate carbon fractions or keep a busy lab moving without a second full instrument.
What does the CHS-r need to run?
It needs oxygen at 99.5 % purity (2–4 bar), an external PC and monitor, and a balance with 0.0001 g resolution. It runs on 230 V, 50/60 Hz (max heat-up current 2,000 W) and uses magnesium perchlorate and sodium hydroxide as reagents. Operating options include an external monitor and keyboard, a monitor holder with wireless keyboard, or a touchscreen. The analyzer measures about 580 × 520 × 750 mm and weighs ~77 kg.
What is the lead time, and can Additive Plus set it up?
The ELEMENTRAC CHS-r is configured to order; request a quote for the current lead time. Additive Plus is an authorized ELTRA / Verder Scientific channel and handles installation, oxygen and balance connection, calibration and operator training, then helps build your C/H/S and TOC SOP. You can also send a sample for a paid measurement first. Sub-4h reply, NDA standard.
