Heat treatment

Carpenter datasheet, process guidance

  • Solution anneal: 1177 °C (2150 °F) for 1 hour, then cool below 540 °C (1000 °F) fast enough to avoid precipitation; rapid air cool for thin parts, oil or water quench for heavy sections.
  • Age is usually not needed; if used: 760 °C (1400 °F) for 3 hours, air cool, then 595 °C (1100 °F) for 3 hours, air cool.
  • HIP to close porosity: at least 100 MPa (14.5 ksi) at about 1260 °C (2300 °F) for 240 minutes or more under inert gas, then solution treat.
  • Not precipitation-hardenable. Machine with single-point carbide tools and a sulfur-base cutting fluid, removed before heat treatment.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request.

Is this Hastelloy X powder powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)?
No. PowderRange X (Hastelloy X) powder (45–106 µm) is the coarse 45–106 µm E cut, made for electron-beam powder bed fusion systems. The Carpenter datasheet covers the fine F cut, so the limits for this cut are on the lot certificate. For laser powder bed fusion, choose the 15–45 µm F cut of PowderRange X, listed in the table at the top of this page with its price and availability.
What is PowderRange X (Hastelloy X) powder (45–106 µm)?
PowderRange X (Hastelloy X) powder (45–106 µm) is a solid-solution nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum superalloy powder from Carpenter Additive, made to AMS7008. It offers strength and oxidation resistance to 1204 °C (2200 °F) and resists stress-corrosion cracking. Carpenter lowered the carbon and adjusted the chemistry to reduce crack susceptibility in laser processing, and as-printed parts show properties equivalent to wrought alloy X. It is vacuum induction melted and argon gas atomized.
How is Hastelloy X heat treated after printing?
Carpenter's guidance for PowderRange X: solution anneal at 1177 °C (2150 °F) for 1 hour, then cool below 540 °C (1000 °F) fast enough to avoid precipitation, with rapid air cooling for thin parts and oil or water quenching for heavier sections. Aging is usually not needed. HIP at about 1260 °C (2300 °F) and at least 100 MPa for 240 minutes or more closes porosity before solution treatment.
Hastelloy X, Inconel 625 or Inconel 718: which should I choose?
Choose Hastelloy X for oxidation resistance at the highest temperatures, up to 1204 °C (2200 °F). Choose 625 for corrosion resistance and toughness from cryogenic temperatures to 1093 °C (2000 °F). Choose 718 when you need the highest strength up to 704 °C (1300 °F), because it is age-hardenable. All three are in our catalog with published prices and Carpenter data on each page.
What equivalent names does Hastelloy X powder have?
Hastelloy X is also called alloy X or Hast X. Carpenter's datasheet lists EOS NickelAlloy HX and SLM Solutions HX as similar materials, which helps when you pick starting parameters for those machines; these are not approvals by the machine makers. Related specifications include UNS N06002, AMS5536, AMS5754, AMS5798 and ASTM B572.
Does Hastelloy X powder come with a certificate of analysis?
Yes. Every order of PowderRange X (Hastelloy X) powder (45–106 µm) ships with Carpenter Additive's certificate of analysis for the lot you receive. It lists chemistry, particle size distribution (D10, D50, D90), flow and apparent density, with the lot number for traceability. Carpenter states that its powder testing meets Nadcap Materials Testing and ISO/IEC 17025 chemical requirements. If your quality team needs to review a recent certificate before you order, ask us and we will send one.
How fast does Hastelloy X powder ship, and how can I pay?
Add PowderRange X (Hastelloy X) powder (45–106 µm) to the cart and the ship date appears next to the button; in-stock Carpenter powder ships from US stock, typically within 2–5 business days. You can pay by card or PayPal, choose Invoice me at checkout to receive an invoice for bank transfer, or send a purchase order to [email protected]. Tax-exempt buyers can upload a certificate at checkout. For 100 kg or more, ask us for a volume quote.
