What your catalysis lab actually checks

Species, not just peaks

Pair the BELCAT II with the BELMASS II and every TPD or TPR peak comes with a mass spectrum — you see which gas desorbed, not only how much. Acidity, reducibility and metal dispersion by the methods your process and publications cite.

About this product

BELCAT II is a fully automated catalyst analyzer for chemisorption and temperature-programmed studies — TPD, TPR, TPO, pulse chemisorption and single-point BET on a high-sensitivity thermal conductivity detector, from –120 to 1200 °C.

What Is the BELCAT II: Automated Catalyst Characterization

The BELCAT II measures acidity, reducibility, oxidation behaviour, metal dispersion and coke content on solid catalysts. A 4-element semi-diffusion TCD with automatic zero-point adjustment tracks low-concentration effluent gases through programmed temperature ramps, and an optional BELMASS II quadrupole mass spectrometer identifies the evolved species. See full specifications below.

Why catalysis labs choose the BELCAT II

Every temperature-programmed method on one automated bench.

Full method suite

TPD, TPR, TPO, TPX, TPSR and pulse chemisorption plus single-point BET — acidity, reducibility, dispersion and coke on one instrument.

High-sensitivity TCD

A semi-diffusion 4-element thermal conductivity detector with automatic zero-point adjustment holds a stable baseline for small, low-concentration peaks.

Wide temperature window

–120 °C with the CATCryo II option up to 1200 °C; heating to 110 °C/min and a 10-minute cool-down keep long sequences short.

Mass-spec ready

Couple the BELMASS II quadrupole MS for evolved-gas analysis — identify desorbed species during TPD and TPR, not just quantify them.

How Additive Plus delivers it

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA standard, typical reply within 4 hours.

Which analysis methods does the BELCAT II support?
The BELCAT II runs temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), reduction (TPR), oxidation (TPO), reaction (TPX) and surface reaction (TPSR), plus pulse chemisorption and single-point BET surface area. That covers acid-site strength (NH₃-TPD), reducibility (H₂-TPR), coke and oxidation state (TPO) and active metal dispersion (CO or H₂ pulse) on one automated instrument, so you characterize a catalyst end to end without moving samples between benches.
What temperature range and heating rates does it reach?
The BELCAT II operates from –120 °C, using the CATCryo II liquid-nitrogen option, up to 1200 °C, with heating rates up to 110 °C/min between 50 and 500 °C. Fast ramps and a roughly 10-minute cool-down from 800 °C keep multi-step sequences short, and the furnace holds programmed profiles precisely for reproducible TPD and TPR peaks.
How does the BELMASS II mass spectrometer add to the BELCAT II?
On its own the BELCAT II quantifies effluent gas with a thermal conductivity detector. Adding the BELMASS II quadrupole mass spectrometer (m/z 1–200) identifies which species desorb or evolve during a run, so a TPD or TPR peak resolves into specific gases — essential for reaction studies, thermal decomposition and evolved-gas analysis where several species overlap.
What detector does it use and how sensitive is it?
The BELCAT II uses a semi-diffusion 4-element thermal conductivity detector with automatic zero-point adjustment. The design keeps the baseline stable during temperature ramps, so small, low-concentration peaks stay measurable. Automatic multi-point calibration after each run converts detector signal to gas quantity for dispersion and acid-site calculations.
Which gases and sample types can it handle?
Compatible carrier and reactant gases include He, Ar, N₂, O₂, H₂, CO, CO₂, NH₃, N₂O and NO, with corrosion-resistant lines available for aggressive gases. A triple sample cell holds powder or pelletized catalyst. An AIRGUARD option lets you load air-sensitive catalysts without exposure, and a vapor dosing unit adds water, methanol, ethanol, toluene or benzene.
Can it measure breakthrough curves for adsorbents?
Yes. Beyond catalyst characterization the BELCAT II measures breakthrough curves to evaluate adsorbent performance — for example CO₂-capture materials, molecular sieves and gas-separation sorbents. Dynamic flow through the sample bed is monitored so you see capacity and breakthrough time under realistic conditions, which supports CCUS and gas-purification development.
What lead time and support come with the BELCAT II?
The BELCAT II is configured to order, so lead time depends on gas lines, the CATCryo II cryo unit, BELMASS II coupling and other options — request a current timeline and we confirm it in writing. Every system includes installation, gas-panel setup, software training and a validated first run on your own catalyst, backed by application engineering with a sub-4-hour response.
