What the BELSORP MR 1 is

The BELSORP MR 1 is a compact, stand-alone analyzer for specific surface area by the dynamic single-point BET method. A gas mixture of known concentration — for example 30 % nitrogen in helium — flows over the sample while it is cooled with liquid nitrogen. A thermal conductivity detector records how much nitrogen the sample takes up and then releases again when the Dewar moves down; the sharper desorption peak is integrated to calculate the surface area.

Pretreatment of one sample and measurement of another run at the same time. The Dewar moves automatically, a calibration function is built in, and the instrument is operated from a touch panel. The surface area is displayed as soon as the measurement ends, without manual calculation, and results can be saved to a USB stick.

What it tells you about a powder — and what it does not

The MR 1 answers one question quickly: what is the BET surface area of this sample? The datasheet names catalysts, battery materials, zeolites, ceramics, carbon, cement, silica, pigments, toners and pharmaceuticals among its fields.

BET specific surface area single-point value from 0.01 m²/g, repeatability within ±1.0 %
Lot comparison the same method and number for every lot, displayed without manual calculation
Throughput approx. 15 minutes per measurement while the next sample is pretreated
Low-area samples krypton as adsorbate instead of nitrogen
Not reported adsorption isotherm, pore size distribution, pore volume — these need a volumetric analyzer

How a dynamic-flow measurement works

AdsorbThe sample is cooled with liquid nitrogen in a flow of adsorbate diluted in helium. As it adsorbs, the gas concentration drops and the detector shows a peak until equilibrium is reached.
DesorbThe Dewar moves down, the sample warms, and the adsorbed gas is released. The detector records a second, sharper peak.
CalculateThe desorption peak is integrated and the BET surface area is calculated automatically and shown on the touch panel.

Where the MR 1 stops — and what to take instead

The MR 1 measures single-point BET surface area of one sample at a time — nothing more. It does not record an adsorption isotherm, so it gives no pore size distribution or pore volume, and single-point BET is not the method for microporous materials. For multi-point BET and mesopores on up to four samples, take the BELSORP MINI X. For micropores and krypton BET down to 0.0005 m²/g, the BELSORP MAX G or the BELSORP MAX X. Pores above 500 nm need mercury porosimetry on the BELPORE, and true density the BELPYCNO gas pycnometer.

What usually stops people — and the honest answer

“Is single-point BET accurate enough?”For routine checks of similar materials against a specification it gives a fast, repeatable number, within ±1.0 %. If you need the full isotherm, multi-point BET or pore sizes, the MINI X is the right instrument.
“Our operators are not specialists.”The touch panel, automatic Dewar movement and built-in calculation were designed for inexperienced users: load the sample, start, read the result.
“Degassing slows us down.”The MR 1 pretreats one sample up to 400 °C while it measures another, so pretreatment does not block the measuring position.
“Will it work on our material?”Send a sample — the test analysis is free — and you see the surface area value before you decide.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Email [email protected] — NDA on request, typical reply within 4 hours.

What is single-point BET and when is it enough?
Single-point BET calculates surface area from adsorption at one relative pressure instead of a full multi-point isotherm. For routine checks of similar materials against a specification it gives a fast, repeatable value. For microporous materials, absolute multi-point BET or pore size data, a volumetric analyzer such as the BELSORP MINI X is the better fit.
How does the dynamic flow method work?
A gas mixture of known concentration, for example 30 % nitrogen in helium, flows over the sample cooled with liquid nitrogen. A thermal conductivity detector records the adsorption and, after the Dewar moves down, the desorption peak. The desorption peak is sharper and is integrated to calculate the BET surface area.
How fast is a measurement and is it automated?
Approx. 15 minutes, including calibration and excluding pretreatment. Pretreatment of one sample runs at the same time as the measurement of another, the Dewar moves automatically and the surface area is calculated and displayed when the measurement ends.
What range and repeatability does it deliver?
The measuring range starts at 0.01 m²/g and repeatability is within ±1.0 %. Nitrogen or krypton can be used as the adsorbate, with helium as the carrier gas.
What pretreatment does it use?
Samples are pretreated at up to 400 °C on the instrument to remove adsorbed water and gases. Pretreatment runs in parallel with measurement, so a separate degasser is not required for the MR 1.
How compact is it and what does it need?
The MR 1 is 350 × 553 × 368 mm and 30 kg. It runs on AC 100–120 V or 200–240 V, 400 W, and needs liquid nitrogen, the adsorbate gas and helium carrier gas. Results are saved to USB as text, Excel or a rich-text report.
What is the lead time and what is included?
The MR 1 is configured to order. Lead time is from 4 weeks after a confirmed order, depending on the configuration, and the formal quotation states the date. Installation and on-site operator training by Microtrac's US service engineers are included in every quotation.
How much does a BELSORP MR 1 cost?
The price depends on the adsorbate and consumables. Request a formal quotation and you receive configuration, price, payment terms and lead time on our letterhead.
Can I test my sample before buying?
Yes, and the test analysis is free. Send a representative sample; it is measured in Microtrac's US application lab and you receive the result, which we go through with you before you decide.
