Fixed or moveable portal

The test head travels over a portal to reach parts that can’t be lifted onto a bench — configured fixed for a station or moveable to traverse long or multiple workpieces.

Integrated milling prepares scaled and as-forged surfaces to a defined test point, so large rings, pipes and forgings are tested without a manual grinding step.

What is a hardness testing portal?
A hardness testing portal is an automated system where the test head travels over a portal or gantry to reach parts too large or heavy to place on a bench tester. QATM configures it fixed for a single station or moveable to traverse long or multiple workpieces, and combines it with automatic test-point preparation so rings, wheels, tyres, pipes and forgings can be tested where they sit.
Should I choose a fixed or a moveable portal?
A fixed portal suits a single test station where parts are brought to one position — for example a ring hardness testing machine. A moveable portal traverses to reach test points along a long workpiece or across several parts, which suits large forgings and inline layouts. The choice is made during scoping around your part flow and throughput.
What part sizes and weights can a portal system handle?
Configurations cover ring diameters from 600 to 1400 mm and workpieces up to about 3 × 3 × 12 m, including wheels, tyres, pipes and drop-forge parts. Which hardness methods does the portal support?

Can the portal verify material and mark parts in line?
Yes. Optional spectral mix-up testing verifies the alloy at the same station to catch material mix-ups, and a marking device can identify parts after testing. Combined with a Ø-measurement station and transport devices, this lets a wheel or tyre automat measure, verify, test, mark and move parts in one automated sequence, with results logged per part in QPIX.
